i came back to this book to finish it off and it was fine! still not my vibe but if you read the blurb and it sounds like you're kind of thing i think it will be.

i did skim the second half of the book to find out what happened, but like i really can't mark it as read so here i am.
idk, it's just not my vibe. i absolutely loved the first 60 pages, and then i stopped caring. i liked the reveals that i skimmed at the end i guess?

I enjoyed this book up until the end, which is always disappointing. I'm not a big mystery reader, and the majority of this book wasn't that - alternate London, shapeshifting, a society segregated by magic, all great - but then the ending just turns into reveal after reveal after reveal that just weren't set up enough for me to care about. Other than Elliot being the spy nothing felt like a satisfying reveal because I wasn't really invested in the other relationships or following a trail of clues, they just happened.

I found the plot of this a little hard to follow at times, as I think the writer occasionally makes leaps without taking the reader with them. I didn’t particularly warm to any of the characters aside from Gedeon at the end . I felt there were similarities to The Bone Season and Crescent City.
