Shallow characters with a novel idea for the plot.

I rather liked the premise for this story quite a lot, though I could rather have done without the bad guys, to be honest. I would have been far happier with a “simple” adventure novel. The characters, on the other hand, needed some hella work. I still don’t feel I know our main protagonists AT ALL. I don’t even fully understand why Maxwell and Chief even like each other, much less love. We know nothing of Maxwell’s past, though it is referred to on several occasions; and she is soooo beyond naive (I know she even admits it herself) but damn-she just takes a major confession from Chief like it’s no big deal, and there’s no reason she should question this AT ALL. And frankly the poorly placed and poor set-up sex scene was just-well, more startling than it was titillating.

As I previously stated, I didn’t care much for the Bad Guy set-up. It seemed too predictable or maybe over-used. As a simple adventure story it would have been simpler, but still more enjoyable. Oh yeah, in my opinion!

Max has never really found a career or a place where she felt like she fit, until one day an old teacher recommends that she go in for an interview at St Mary’s, a mysterious historical research institution. This was a lot of fun, and much more of a page turner than I was expecting. There were some twists and turns toward the end that were maybe a bit much for me but the whole thing is intended (I think) to be practically a romp. It will be a good series to remember when I need something to keep me occupied on a travel day. Trigger warning for an unexpected sexual assault scene.

This book was great fun! Time travel, strong female lead, great audiobook to pass the time on a long ride.

I enjoyed it overall. Tbh I didn’t realize I was starting a whole big series - I came into this completely blind, so the story doesn’t actually resolve since this is the first book. I enjoyed the up and down nature of the events - when I was expecting it was resolving, there was one last big push. I got lost in the sauce a bit regarding the characters, though. It’s a fairly large list of people, with only one or two distinctive qualities being given to several of them, so when some of them die off it didn’t have much of an impact.

Has a great story going for it and more than a little history in with the time travel adventure. One of those books where you are reading and think you don't have an investment in the characters (who come at you fast and plentiful at the beginning) only to need to know what happens to them next.
