my first book on indigenous characters. i love being introduced to something i don’t know much about and to learn new things. this is a great introduction yet i wish the story was longer and i learnt more about the characters/ their relationship (with each other and their family etc)

A very important and beautiful graphic novel about two Native girls who are as close as sisters. The presence of the ghosts of Native women on almost every page show that history is all around us, and that these girls are supported by their community - but at the same time they also draw attention to the dead and missing Native women. The end of the graphic novel has some more information, like statistics and further readings on the issue.

I haven't read the sequel yet, but I took a glance and it seems it goes into more detail about Dez's two-spirit identity, so I hope I'll be able to get my hands on it.

A slim, but important and beautiful graphic novel about being an Indigenous woman or two spirit person in a Canadian city. I'm embarrassed to say I did not know about Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S)-- the fact that this population is far more likely to be murdered or kidnapped than white or any other female-identified person and far more likely to experience abuse. So, this was an education and a jumping off point for my education.

There were two especially powerful pieces of the book: the Indigenous ceremonies and the depictions of ancestors that followed everyone around like shadows, especially the "shadows" of white men. It was a very effective show-don't-tell element. Looking forward to #2 and understanding my responsibility to educate myself on this topic.

The pages become more vibrant and colorful when the focus is on Indigenous culture, and I think that's beautiful.

A little rant (not about the book):
99% of goodreads reviews are people saying that the writing had shortcomings because it didn’t explain every Indigenous related thing to them and they didn’t know what was happening. If you don’t know something, just look it up. The author literally gives you THREE pages with resources at the end of the graphic novel.

White people centering themselves and expecting everything to cater to them is a fucking poison.

The way the departed women were depicted as still with everyone made me emotional. Highly recommend. Isn’t very long and worth a read. #NoMoreStolenSisters
