I feel like this book would have been so much better if we got to hear more of the story after she left. For instance, what did her family do? Did they shun her? What did her mother think after she left? Was she proud?

I could not bare the ableist language and descriptions, and use of the r word. There were also discriminatory depictions of mental illness and restraint.  There were racist descriptions of black boys with no meaningful discussion around this,
