I really love how this author ties poetry into prose and uses pieces of history to connect with the present. This book was also great for speaking out on misogyny and sexual assault. However, I do think it dragged on a little too long. Would recommend, just not if you’re in a reading slump!

I really enjoyed th mix of prose and verse. I think it made the pace more interesting than a traditional book. The story is empowering, as well as being emotional and easy to understand.

Really a 4.5 for me. I loved the inclusion of Jess who identifies as non-binary and whose preferred pronouns are they/them. The medieval stuff is just not my vibe, but I know it will be for other readers. I loved the concept of Em writing her own story to “change history” and also her perspective in general. How she navigates her sister’s assault and what it is like to be a sibling who can’t take that hurt away are important and interesting experiences to explore. This book accomplishes so much.

Powerful. Necessary. Heart-breaking. Beautiful.
