This story was very strange. I don't know how to describe what it made me feel... I just thought it was strange. The idea of the universe is very interesting and I believe it could be expanded into a good, longer book. The story was very short, I would like to know more about the characters' lives. As strange as I found it, I was interested in reading more about them. I believe that the author is extremely talented and the writing is very good but it left something to be desired in terms of development.

Very strange introduction to Octavia Butler. An odd short story about human beings used to farm insect type sentiant beings. Truly gross, weird, and unusual.

Definitely an interesting read that could very well be an ingenious allegory for some ethics that I’m too dense to understand after just one read. I like that it showed a more realistic interpretation of an interplanetary colony (read: not as utopian or fantastical as Star Trek etc) and Butler’s afterword was definitely helpful in understanding the thought process behind what I had just read. I’m torn between thinking that the story is too short because I want more exploration of this society; and thinking that it’s the perfect length because it gives us just enough information to work with while leaving us wanting more.
