It is incredible that between 400 pages I experienced generations of love, heartbreak, forgiveness, disloyalty, and faith within a family. The writing is beautiful and characters are complex and so well done, as heart wrenching as it was I loved getting to know them all and cried the whole way.

I really enjoyed this book. The author does an excellent job of fleshing out each character and his or her perspective and weaving them together.

My mom has been on my case to read this book for years. It really rocked her shit. It follows the story of an Indian-American Muslim family. The style is made up of episodic vignettes that move back and forth in time within the framing narrative of the oldest daughter’s wedding. It shifts third person POV between the mom, dad, oldest sister, youngest brother (there is a middle sister who doesnt get a POV, I guess). The writing is very good. The structure of this plot was perfect down to each page. This author graduated from the Iowa Writers Workshop, which is a big deal in the literary community. Her characters were so real, so genuinely flawed and imperfect. It made me super conscious of my lens as a white American woman. There are things in the culture of this book that made me indignant, but these characters accept it as the norm and work around it. I suppose that made it feel more real. This book is going to hit parents harder, I think. It really captures the heartbreak and fleeting nature of parenthood. Especially parenthood with an estranged adult child.

Holy cow this book sneaks up on you and before you know it you’re part of the family. Completely tore me apart fully broke me open in Part Four. Wow wow wow! The journey is well worth the destination.
My heart aches for Amar but I know they will meet again.

Why should you read this book?
A Place For Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza is the first book published by Sarah Jessica Parker’s new imprint for Hogarth! I have to say that I fell in love with this book and I know that I’ll feel this way about it for a long time. This will be that sort of book I will often recommend to people. And this also means that A Place For Us became one of my favorite books EVER!

A Place For Us tells the story of an Indian-American Muslim family. It deals with genre, family expectations and religious issues. This book is poignant and life-changing. It makes you question your attitudes and postures and remembers you to be more tolerant and accepting of others. In terms of structure, the novel is told by different voices and lacks linearity. And, although it’s a slow-burner, A Place For Us keeps calling you and you keep wanting to pick up where you left off.

Mirza is an incredible and talented writer. Her prose is absolutely poetic! Part 4 is definitely a sublime piece of literature. I was slowly savoring it because I didn’t end this book. Please, read this book! You won’t regret it!
