This book is **BIG** on themes, in a small package. It might be meant for middle schoolers, but it's not a condescending book at all. I remember being 12, and on the cusp of leaving childhood behind. Caroline grows up, figures out who she is, learns to forgive herself and others, starts seeing shades of grey. This is a great bildungsroman!

A heartfelt depiction of mental illness, budding queerness and disjointed families seen through the eyes of a 12 year old!

Another great novel by Kacen Callender! There is a reason they are my favorite author. Such heavy topics this novel focuses on—abandonment, bullying, and homophobia (both internalized and external) are the main topics—but it also focuses on lightheaded topics like young love. They’re writing is nothing less than perfection, and I would’ve given this book 5 stars if I wasn’t so emotionally involved and upset with some of the characters… again, beautiful writing. As a future English teacher, I hope to have this novel in my classroom for my students to read :) Absolutely love!
