This book is **BIG** on themes, in a small package. It might be meant for middle schoolers, but it's not a condescending book at all. I remember being 12, and on the cusp of leaving childhood behind. Caroline grows up, figures out who she is, learns to forgive herself and others, starts seeing shades of grey. This is a great bildungsroman!

I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. The voice actress did an incredible job. I felt that this had a strong representation of what it is like trying to just survive in elementary school. I adored the relationship between Calinda and Caroline.

I wanted to like this book. It had some interesting elements--a desire to search for a missing mother, mysterious figures no one else can see, subtle commentary on island life. However, the book never leaned fully into one theme or element, which left me feeling unsatisfied. It was as if the book dipped its toes into multiple pools and couldn't ever decide which one to jump into.

Perhaps the bigger problem is that the main character isn't very interesting. She doesn't have any hobbies. She complains for most of the book. She doesn't seem to love anything other than one person she just met and is now obsessed with. Her personality seems to just be bitter and stubborn. Perhaps this is very realistic for twelve-year-old girls, but it gets old fast when that's the only voice you hear.

Still, the interesting elements I mentioned earlier kept me going.

A heartfelt depiction of mental illness, budding queerness and disjointed families seen through the eyes of a 12 year old!

Hurricane child was a story that I didn’t want to put down, and found myself thinking about what was going to happen next on the days I couldn’t get to it. Loved Caroline’s character, all of that stubbornness and anger and bravery and intelligence, a really well rounded and whole person that despite everything was just so loveable. Also queer?? Amazing had no idea that it would be a main element of the story, and really enjoyed the way that it was investigated by these children. Also the dialogue and decisions that the children made were all very realistic, and it really felt like I was actually watching children interacting. Highly enjoyed and very well done.
