Political and fantastical, a language of dragons is a book like no other I’ve read before. Set in the early 1900s we see a UK that hosts humans and dragons, who live aside one another with the help of a national peace agreement.
We follow our main character Viv, as her world falls around her. With parents accused of treason and being part of the rebellion, she does what she can to try get them freed. Her actions end up being less conspicuous than she’d hoped and her linguistic talents find her placed at Bletchley park to earn her family’s pardon as part of a team of codebreakers trying to crack a new language that could change the path of the war.
The politics in this are complex and detailed and I loved how they brought growth to many of our characters as the truths they’d been told about their world begin to crumble. Relationships in this are passionate and strong with some blooming romances as well as familial love, facing the challenges the war may bring.
Despite the chunkyness of this book, I finished it ready to dive into the sequel which I immediately preordered.
