I'm immediately buying this one for my teen Fantasy fans. Clever exploration of politics, statesmanship, national secrets and language. Good characters, believable dragons. Tame enough for mature younger readers.

Mam bardzo mieszane uczucia względem tej książki. Jak pomysł na świat i fabułę mi się podobał, tak kompletnie nie mogłam się przekonać do bohaterów. Główna bohaterka początkowo mnie irytowała do tego stopnia, że wręcz rozważałam DNFa, ale ciekawość smoków wygrała. Od wyborów FMC, szczególnie pod koniec, niemal nabawiłam się problemów od przewracania oczami... Ostatecznie jednak nie jestem zachwycona całością, a za ewentualne kontynuacje zdecydowanie nie planuję się zabierać.

It was surprisingly intriguing. I had a hard time wrapping my head around a world that co-existed on a semi-equal level with dragons and that they spoke English (as well as other languages), lived among humans, and had jobs. The science and technicalities of language were really interesting. It was a YA book but had some heavier themes of assault, SA, torture, abuse, and extreme classism. Classism was a huge part of the political structure and basis for the entire book.
I think this would have been slightly better if the characters weren't quite so young and naive. I really struggled with the FMC, she was far too indoctrinated and naive and a bit unlikable. She had her redemption moment, but it took far too long.
The audiobook was a struggle due to the unlikeable FCM and a slightly petulant tone of the narrator. I ended up getting the KU copy and finishing the book with my eyeballs. I will be reading book 2 but it isn't a high priority.
