3.56 AVERAGE

It was.... average. The romance wasn't compelling the plot was... Okay. Not terrible but not anything special.

I really couldn't decide what to rate this. At first I wasn't very impressed with it and was even a bit bored, and I was thinking about giving it a 2. But the last third or so of the novel really picked up and left me feeling pretty emotional. I'm thinking a 3 is fair.

Not as good as cruel beauty. but still a good read

Rating: 2/5
The book just didn't meet my expectation. I loved Hodge's debut Cruel Beauty and was expecting an epic story just like it. The first few chapters were amazing, but then.... well.

Amazing dark fantasy set in France. Beautifully grim

I read this one because I really enjoyed her first book and her novella (Cruel Beauty; Gilded Ashes). I liked that they were just kind of unexpected retellings and this one was the same way. It was a really interesting world that Hodge created and I also thought the legends were fascinating. I didn't like how everything was kind of French, but at the same time kind of not, though. I also think it's kind of weird how this isn't supposed to be part of the Cruel Beauty universe, but then the covers make it look like they're a series--I just think the cover design team needed to do something different there. Overall, I liked it but ***SPOILER*** I shipped Rachelle with Erec instead of Armand ***END SPOILER***. I don't know if that was really a spoiler, but I'll play it safe. I'm definitely going to keep reading Hodge's books.

i liked the feel of the book a lot; dark fairy-tale with evocative descriptions.

Honestly should’ve finished reading sooner, but OMG this was such an amazing read. I loved Rachelle and though I thought she was self-pitying she was still a badass heroin. I loved this story so much because you never saw where it was taking you. It was a lot of twists and turns and there was NEVER a dull moment.

Really fun, fairytale-inspired read. I think the mythos and plot of this story flowed a lot better than Hodge’s other retelling “Cruel Beauty”. There were also a couple enjoyable twists that did catch me by surprise. I wish the romantic pairings had a little more tension to work with, but overall I found the love triangle interesting enough to keep reading.

I loved our main character, Rachelle. Probably because she bears an uncanny resemblance to another headstrong character that I adore: Abigail Armstrong.
