David Petersen lets a bunch of other comic-book writers and artists play around in the world he created, in a Canterbury Tales sort of format. I really love the stories and the artwork in this volume, but as with Petersen's original stories, what bugs me most is misspellings and mistakes in grammar: lots of incorrect "its/it's" mistakes. Also, the writers try to make the language sound old, but it just doesn't quite come off the right way.

Enjoyed this, esp Nevermore and Toad and the Shrike.

I liked the toad and the shrike one best.

As is always the case with collections, there's variance in quality, but these are all quick reads and a lot of them are really pretty.

If you worry that this will deviate too far from the Mouse Guard you know and love, fear no more!

Legends of the Guard was absolutely incredible. I was worried. The idea seems absurd! Bring in a dozen other creators to play around in the world you created!? While it sounds crazy, it was done so absolutely perfectly.

Petersen wrote and illustrated the setting scenes which happen to be June Alley Inn. Mice gather at the end of a day to tell stories over drinks. The best storyteller has their tab cleared at the end of the night. Each story is told by a different mouse which is both illustrated and written by a different artist, most of whom are friends of Petersen's.

All of this works so well. Sure, there were some stories I loved more than others. There were some art styles that I preferred over others. But they are all excellent in their own rights.

My favorites: Bowen's Tale and Crown of Silver, Crown of Gold.

This was far cuter, more imaginative and varied, and just plain fun, than I had anticipated.
Full review to follow but suffice to say I have discovered some excellent new illustrators through reading this and will be looking up some of their other works.
I also fully intend to pick up all the rest of the Mouse Guard books very soon! 4*s

So, this was my first venture into the world of the Mouse Guard, a world originally created by David Peterson. I wanted to try this book out right from the first time I saw it in a shop, becuase the cover and interior art was stunning to look at and it's about cute mice! (what more could you want). However, with that said I didn't really know what sort of stories it would be or the tone of the writing and so I was just hoping it would be something I'd at least enjoy.

Luckily for me this story is super diverse and easy to follow and we see that it\s introduced by David Peterson in a little tavern where the patrons are challenged to come up with interesting stories and win the day. These smaller stories are then illustrated, written and coloured by a whole variety of different artists and writers with Peterson just filling in the in-between moments with his own illustrations.

I think that the short story format worked very well becuase it doesn't spoil anything about the general Mouse Guard universe, but it certainly makes you want to see more of the mice. I found myself absorbed in their adventures right from the first story, and I was pretty hooked through to the end.

Each of the creators within this have been specially picked by David Peterson which means that you have a great mix of styles, but they're all top quality. I would honestly say that there were no styles I disliked, although there were certainly some that really stood out, and so this is a great way to see some work by some wonderful talent.

Some of the stories I most enjoyed were:
The Battle of the Hawk's Mouse and the Fox's Mouse - Jeremy Bastian
Potential - Sean Rubin & Alex Kain
Bowen's Tale - Karl Kerschl

There were lots of other fun ones, but the art styles and stories of these three were my favourites and the most memorable ones for me :)

On the whole a great entry point and it's made me want to keep discovering more of the cute little mice. I also loved the page showing each of them and their roles in the world! 4*s

Nenhum conto me interessou muito.

I came to Mouse Guard through the role-playing game, and this is my first exposure to the universe, other than the short game that we played (although the stories in this book are non-canonical). It's a lovely volume with stories and artwork provided by different artists, all within a framing story of a tale-telling competition in a tavern somewhere in the western end of the mouse territories.

The stories are all quite different, although many of them stick to a mythic quality. We have light-hearted, comic stories; myths of the origins of the Mouse Guard itself; even a retelling of Poe's The Raven, with a mouse protagonist. All enjoyable and short enough to not outstay their welcome.

What I did find slight odd was the epilogue. I'm not sure, but it seemed to be a drunken dream of one of the clients in the tavern of the framing story. I didn't find that it made much sense and it seemed like an odd way to close off the book.

For people who are unfamiliar with Mouse Guard this is a nice little introduction, and for those who are, I imagine it's a lovely set of stories within the universe.

Mostly just cute! I liked the conceit and the adorable mice. I haven't read anything else from this series but I'll look into it, as I'm interested in seeing these mice in a more cohesive story.
