This was a book club pick and I was excited to try this one out as I read The Teacher by Freida McFadden and I was pleasantly surprised. The plot of this book however, wasn’t one I was initially interested in but was open to giving it a shot.

The book is set in the mansion of a Psychiatrist who has gone missing. Our main characters Tricia and Ethan are viewing the house as a potential new home to buy. They’re newlyweds and Tricia is hiding her pregnancy from him out of fear of what he will say as they decided to wait a few years to have kids. We are under the impression that this is the only secret in the story, hence the title.

When they arrive at the mansion during a blizzard, they get stuck there for a few days. To occupy herself, Tricia finds a secret room with tapes of session recordings from the psychiatrist who has gone missing. As Tricia, listens to these tapes she starts to understand what happened to the psychiatrist and her disappearance.

I listened to the audiobook of this and I think it made things ten times better for me. It was a great way to hear from the current main character, Tricia and hear the POV of Adrian Hale, the psychiatrist. To go back and forth from past to present and see how those two POV’s start to merge into each other was really well done. The twist in the end of uncovering our main characters secrets and how they aren’t so innocent themselves was really well written.

This is hard to rate because it’s a 5 star 3 star book if you know what I mean. Freida’s always good for a twist!

Clever, kinda predictable. The twists were good but not eluded to well, that makes for a good surprise but leaves some plot holes.
