Meh

I really wanted to like this story. Hunky military man looks after his best friend's sister...but it seems to just exist. The potential is there and yet it falls flat for me. Not enough depth or meat to sink your teeth in..just meh.

The hero and heroine are a bit too stubborn and sensitive in my opinion which led to me being annoyed by their repetitive arguments about the same stuff.

I liked the camaraderie between the marine men and how much they invested in each other's lives. I'm interested to see more of that dynamic in the next three books.

Harper is trying to get more information about her brothers military death. Levi was with him when he died and knows that the truth will only hurt those left behind. When the two reconnect their love/hate relationship brings up hurtful memories of the past, including Levi never showing up for her prom. Their life love attraction explodes and both are stunned to realize that love is the only thing they need. I cannot wait for more stories in this series. This was a great book that I highly recommend.

An easy to listen to, high paced story.
There were twists I didn't see coming and the suspense was high.
Levi and Harper were infuriating at times (with their ever changing emotions) but I did enjoy their dynamic.

Joe and Maxine did a fabulous job.

I was really excited to start Duty Bound. I recently discovered Samantha Chase and Noelle Adams and have enjoyed their works. I thought perfect! I like these two authors, I should enjoy their books they wrote together. Unfortunately that is not what happened. The writing was just not good. It was...it was just not written as well as other books I read by either of the authors. That and I couldn't stand Harper. That definitely didn't help.

Levi is back from the military. Back because of an accident that killed Harper's brother and his best friend, and injured him and his fellow soldier brothers. As soon as he sees Harper he is smitten. She is beautiful, but Gavin's sister. Gavin who they just buried. He needs to stay away because of that. I mean really the timing would be terrible.

Harper is convinced that there is something going on with the accident that killed her brother. Something she has not been told. She is a reporter and determined to get to the bottom of it. The only problem? Someone seems to be trying to kill her and she won't take that seriously. Levi does everything he can to help protect her, but that just makes her furious with him. She has a hissy fit every two seconds about how she is a big girl and can take care of herself, even though she acts like she is two. She frustrated me to no end. She was always saying how grown up she was, but she never acted like it. If Levi would suggest she do something, like go to the police, she would just instantly be all no way! Even if she was going to do that to begin with. Ugh it was annoying.

So Harper was annoying and acted like she was two, Levi was alright but a bit overprotective, and the entire way through book it was just like 'I hate him/her! But they are so hot....they are so annoying! But look how hot they are!' It was not good. It was just they had a physical attraction that they eventually acted on and somehow that was supposed to be love in the end. Really not a favorite of mine, but I might give the second book a chance just to see if with different characters that I didn't hate if the book would be better.

Protecting His Best Friends Sister was an interesting read for me. This is an updated re-release of Duty Bound which I had read before and didn't care for. I gave it 2 stars as...well the girl annoyed me and the two main characters didn't work that well. That and Levi was a bit to over the top. I had forgotten that this was an updated version of that story when I started and I found I really enjoyed it. Much more than the original version. I am not sure exactly what was changed or added, I did compare the intro to both and this version reads a lot better than it originally did. Not that there is a huge difference, the story is still the same, but it works now. Small changes here and there, little things added really made this a much more enjoyable read for me. I am glad the authors decided to re-release this as I love them both and so it is nice to have another book of theirs to re-read.

Harper is a stubborn, headstrong lady. She always has a cause she is fighting for and no one can stop her from getting to the bottom of something once she puts her mind to it. Her brother recently died overseas in the military and she really thinks that there is a coverup. Something more happened than what they are telling her family and she is determined to find out what, even if it looks like someone doesn't want her to.

Levi was Harper's brothers best friend. He has known Harper practically his whole life and has had a crush on her for a long time. There is just something there, she is it for him, but he can't act on it. I mean it is his best friends sister! And now his best friend isn't here anymore so it is really not the time to try and see what would happen with Harper. Only when she starts getting threats and odd things start happening he can't stay away. He has to keep her safe. That is what her brother would want. And that is the only reason he is spending so much time around her right?

These two were fun to read. Harper will be stubborn and get a rise out of Levi, but she knows when to take something seriously. She gets so annoyed when he steps in and tries to take things over, make her do things. She knows what she needs to do and she is capable of doing things. She has always felt like she needed to prove how capable she is since she is so short. It was fun. They kind of but heads a lot, but they both care for the other even if they don't want to. I really enjoyed this updated version of the story. The characters are the same, but small changes or additions made them more likable for me. More real so I understood the push and pull they had going on. This was a fun read. If you have read this one before and didn't care for it give it another try. It was great.

This was a very quick read and I enjoyed it for the most part. Things moved VERY quickly and I found myself wishing for a little more story development. I'm still not sure what happened to Gavin and why Harper thought there was more to the story than just a simple accident.

*I received an ARC from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book free as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

While I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one - I thought the dynamic between the two seemed odd at first and found their lack of communication a bit overdone. The chemistry was still there, but it was just a bit much for me.

Not my favorite book from this author - I have high standards for her as I love both the Montgomery & Shaugnessy book series - it was still a very enjoyable read. Great summer read!

I am still trying to decide what I want to say about this book while I am writing the review.

I have wanted to read this book since I posted the blitz about it on my blog.

We have Levi, who is back from war with his other 3 friends. They have lost the fifth member of their group, who also was Harper’s brother.

Harper is on a mission to find out what actually happened when her brother died. Levi knows the answer to that but doesn’t want her to know.

And so it goes.

I loved Levi as the protective alpha male, trying to protect Harper from whoever is out to get her.

I wasn’t a big fan of Harper. She is a small woman, yes, we know that. But wow. Harper feels like she has to be over aggressive to prove that she can handle herself and it drove me a bit nuts. We know, you are tough. You got this. No need to be quite so angry when someone does something for you.

Things I wished –

That Levi would have told Harper about how her brother died. There could have been a confrontation and then a moment there.

That when it came to who was trying to kill Harper that it would have been expanded. It went by too quickly. They were there and gone. I wish there would have been more to the background of that story.

Overall it was a good book, I just wished there was more to the stories. It was the difference between truly caring about the characters and feeling kind of meh about them.
