450k words long, but has enough plot to justify its length - basically 2-3 books worth of content crammed into one giant volume

I was not able to make it through this book. I really liked the first two in this series, but this book seemed to really drag on. The first two books seemed to be focused on Kaladin, but this book focuses more on Dalinar. I don't find him as likable a character as Kaladin. I don't enjoying reading about his back story. About half way through this book I found myself dreading picking it up. At that point I decided it was not worth reading anymore. I would recommend the first half (the part that I read) for 12 and up.

This book was a journey. Filled to the brim with interesting characters, it thrives in making moral dilemmas manifest through them in their unique scenarios. The extent of the world building is also impressive and deep. But of the three I’ve (re)read from this series so far, this is my least favorite. It was like a filler episode - full of pertinent information that will be used to its fullest extent in the future but not doesn’t lend to as engaging of a story in the moment. The dialogue also lacks a genuine nature, particularly with Shallan. Sometimes she thinks she’s so clever but in my mind what she said was predictable. This extends to her relationship and reactions with Adolin, though not quite as bad. I’m still interested in how this story progresses, but feeling less attached than I did after a fantastic book 2.

"Journey before destination" - That's all well and good, but if the journey drags on for too long it can overshadow the destination.

A step down from the previous two books. After the ending of WoR a world "reset" was required to allow characters to readjust to the new world they find themselves in. However, in my opinion, little happened for around 700 pages and I found myself struggling with a Sanderson book for the first time. That being said, the ending of the book was fantastic and went a long way to redeeming the book.

Like book 2, this one started off slowly. At one point I actually started to feel less interested. However, I knew what still had to come was going to be amazing, and it was. The story is so well written. Everything just feels exactly like it should. It took about 50 hours to read this book, but the commitment is well worth it. I can’t wait for the next one to come out
