An enjoyable read despite the slow start. Thought provoking, frustrating but nevertheless satisfying. The trials and tribulations that Perry undergoes pushes the reader to feel deeply for his cause and cheer his neverending positivity on despite his circumstances. It was book filled with lovable characters and relationships that ignites emotions.
This book was so good! I adore Perry T. Cook and I would love to visit Surprise and to be honest, I would welcome another book with these characters. Absolutely delightful and I will be thinking about Perry and Jessica Cook for many days to come. If you read Middle Grade, I strongly recommend checking this one out.
This wasn't easy to get into at first. The characters are squeaky clean (despite the protagonist being 12 years old and the setting being a prison), and for the first half of the book, I yawned a lot and wished I didn't have to finish the book. But at the halfway point, it did start to get interesting despite being pretty unrealistic. The audience is definitely middle grades (4-6?), not adults, so my opinion of it isn't really that important. I'm curious to see what real kids think of the book; it's full of positivity and healthy relationships; it'd be great for bedtime reading with your 4th-6th grade kid (chapters are nice and short). Realistic fiction.
Top notch children's book for middle school readers. The main character, a very likeable eleven year old boy named Perry Cook has lived all of his life in a minimum security prison. His mom is an inmate there due to manslaughter. Perry has a number of close friends among the other inmates at the prison. We get to know them and their stories.
Perry's mom should be getting out soon on parole but the district attorney learns about how he has been living there all those years and puts that on pause while looking into it. He also moves Perry into his house. What helps is that his step-daughter is also Perry's best friend. Well, that is the situation Perry has to deal with. It is done with sensitivity and good sense.

11-year-old Perry lives with his mom and lots of friends in a minimum security prison in Surprise, Nebraska. When the local district attorney gets wind of this unusual arrangement, he makes some severe changes that affect both his and Perry’s family.
I LOVED this book. It taught me so much about what “family” really means. Perry is such a great kid with a support system that allows his to thrive, and I loved seeing the prison system portrayed in such a positive light. The characters and plot were super engaging, and I read late into the night because I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this middle-grade book!

This book was amazing. I don’t really have anything to critique about it. I docked off a star because for some reason, and maybe it’s just me, I couldn’t get into it at first. I was never thinking that I needed to pick it up right then and there because it was so good. However, I did enjoy the story very much and loved the plot line.

Rating is more like 3.5 stars. I loved the plot, but the narration and voice were a bit awkward.
A wonderful middle-grade book! Well written, intriguing story that brings you right into the characters' lives. The characters are depicted in such a way that you really like them and get emotionally attached. So glad I had this one recommended to me!
