I had been in a reading slump and this book got me right out of it. this was exactly the type of book i love. Achilles did make me angry at quite a few points and even though i knew what was gonna happen it didn't drag. the writing was captivating and the main character was so real..i felt like i would do anything for him.
At the end though i was more distressed at the idea that Patroclus  might never rest in peace than the fact that he died.
overall,it played my emotions like a fiddle.

Every time I finish this book I have to have a good cry after. "Seeing" the characters grow up and fall in love and having that focus on them really makes the ending heart-wrenching (but in a good way).

The romantic/sexual moments between Achilles and Patroclus are written so beautifuly and tenderly it's just...it makes me happy. I don't know how else to put it.

The constant foreshadowing is so painful, knowing that the characters are optimistic purely because they are unaware of their fate makes it so much more emotional and :((

The only thing I have an issue with (but this is an issue with almost all cis gay romances I've read, unfortunately) is the whole thing of hating "female" bodies and the negative descriptions of sex with them. As a transmasc this makes me dysphoric as hell and I just wish there would be less focus on this stuff :( so if this is an issue for you, too, proceed with caution. Otherwise, this book is wonderfully written, both in terms of imagery and plot.

I... don't think I'm the right reader for this one. First, I know almost nothing about greek mithology (meaning that I confused the characters throughout the whole book). Second, although I'm comfortable with reading in english and read mostly in english, it is not my first language, so the writing and the vocabulary (although beautiful and poetic) was pretty difficult for me. Third, although I liked the characters and the romance, this was just too dramatic for my taste (in my defense, I started reading this book not knowing that it would be +50% about war). So, I'm giving this three stars because I think it's a good book, just not a good book for me.

this book was amazing. the writing was phenomenal, Madeline Miller did a great job of writing the dialogue, the descriptions, the imagery, and the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus so beautifully.

let me tell you about Achilles and Patroclus, if someone doesn’t love me like they love each other, i don’t want it. Madeline Miller did a fantastic job of putting so much love and admiration into words and showing how much and how deeply Achilles and Patroclus loved each other. there’s witty banter and there’s scenes where they showed undying devotion. i feel like crying, screaming, and throwing up. (also if no one says “because you're the reason. swear it.” to me or refers to me as ‘philtatos’ once, i’m going to throw a riot)

the ending still made me cry, even though i knew what was coming. i knew about the Homer’s Illiad before hand and the ending was revealed in the middle of the story. but just the feeling of knowing what’s in store and waiting for the impending doom will always keep someone on the edge of their seat. when the ending actually happens, it hurts just as much or maybe even more. knowing that something’s bound to happen and you can’t do anything to stop it really brings someone to tears. the ending was so many levels of sad. but the ending does offer the thinnest silver lining and some peace of mind, so i’m grateful for that.

saying that the ending broke me is an understatement, i’ve rarely ever cried due to romance. but i’ve cried 5 times because of the last 60 pages of this book and my eyes have never felt dry, so. here is where i’ll end my review. if you’re looking for a good cry, go read this book!!
