One of my all time favorite books that introduced me to the dystopian theme! Since reading, I have been desperately been trying to find a story as good as Violet’s!
It was a fast read to me. It did feel rushed often like the author was trying to spit the information out at me, but I didn't mind that too much because it suits my personality (I'm a quick paced person too). I thought the plot and the concept were VERY interesting, but I was left wanting more from the characters. I want more on Violet. I don't feel that she was as 3 dimensional as she could have been. I haven't been able to empathize with her. She's narrating the story but I don't really recognize her personality. It may be that she never had the chance to develop one, which would make sense, but I do hope that she's given more of a personality in the next book.
Lee and Viggo are very mysterious but I also haven't really gotten to see who they truly are yet. I haven't gotten the chance to fall in love with any of the characters. I'm intrigued and do want to know what happens next, but I'm not obsessing over it, if that makes sense. The ending did leave me in shock but it was quick to forget about. It's not the kind of book where I was left breathless and desperate for more, which is why I gave 4 out of 5. It's a good first book and I will read the rest, but those are my complaints: characters missing a bit of personality and book missing just a little bit of wow factor.

The ending was SO unexpected! I really enjoyed this book, but the last 5 chapters I couldn’t put it down!
Graphic: Physical abuse, Sexism, Violence, Kidnapping, Injury/Injury detail
Poorly written with more plot holes than plot. It feels like it was written by an alien with only a loose grasp on the reality of human life and interactions. I hate myself for downloading the second book to find out if Viggo survived.

Interesting....
I am not a huge fan of romance, so if that wasn’t part of the story, I likely would have given this 5 stars. I liked the concept a lot! And, I am fascinated with Violet’s character...I did not, however, realize that this was a series, so it will be a while before I find out more about Violet!

Have you had your fill of strong independent female in YA books? Tris and Katniss have really set the bar very high. But then we meet Violet Bates, a new female lead in The Gender Game. Violet is instantly likeable, she’s not some airy fairy character, she has a tainted history filled with pain and sorrow but it doesn’t define her. I enjoyed reading about Violet and it was easy to emotionally invest in her.
The Gender Games is about two nations Matrus and Patrus. The variation between the two is that in one woman rule over men and in the other men over women. It seems like a very heavy topic but it works. It’s actually very revealing and interesting.
The book has a small tight triangle of main characters, they are all very strong in their own way. Each of them stands out and Bella Forrest is excellent in giving them all a different voice and writing style for each one.
I enjoyed the pace of the book, I was never bored. I did not have time to be, it carry’s you along with the character’s adventures. My heart was racing so fast at many parts and I was shouting at Violet a lot!
I am overjoyed to learn that the book is series and I cannot wait to start book two. If you enjoyed the likes of Divergent or The Hungar Games then you will really enjoy The Gender Game.

Solid light reading. It’s got all the mindless plot points needed. Government conspiracy, forbidden love, underdog heroine... everything one needs to leave the world behind.
