Simple writing of a compelling story. Bought the first two for my daughter to read during the summer, and I can't wait to start the second one myself. I hope it continues to be as interesting and thought provoking.

There was nothing particularly spectacular about this book. The entire reason I got it was because I'm trialing Kindleunlimited and this was a free book.
I found it enjoyable, but I wasn't wowed by anything that really happened. I was rolling my eyes at the main character, rather than feeling sympathetic. The stereotypes in the two nations run very, very deep in an overly exaggerated way. This is intended, but it made it difficult for me to take the story seriously.

I found it to be an easy read, and I'll continue the series simply because I wanted something light to read.
dark mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix

This was an interesting concept, but 1) It took me forever to get into it because I simply didn’t believe in the setup. There’s no way a government would send a relatively untrained girl into a hostile country to steal something extremely important and then return. 2) The storyline was very predictable. 3) The thematic points made regarding gender equality were made in a particularly heavy-handed manner.

3.5 Stars.
The name is a bit misleading, as it's not really a game in the sense that another popular YA series would lead you to believe. And I can see the frustrations voiced by other reviewers that a book published in 2016 in America and purporting to address "The Gender Game" would include only cisgender characters (at least, so far). But, I tend to be a reader who just wants good entertainment from my YA reading. And this was that. The characters were engaging and the storyline kept me turning the pages. Some elements felt a bit superficial, some plot points were too easily predicted, but that balanced with the quick pace of the read. And I was caught completely off-guard by the betrayal at the end, so I appreciate the story for catching me unawares there. I'm not completely sold on the series, but interested enough to pick up Book 2 and see where the story goes from here.

Couldn't put it down! A unique cross between Divergent and Hunger Games. I was shocked and excited to see that there are 6 more books in the series. Can't wait to read book 2!

this book was trashy and the writing was awful, but I can’t deny that it was indeed entertaining.

the story was contrived and lame, but in a funny way. i wanted to know what violent violet was up to and I wanted to roll my eyes some more at the silly dialogue and plot.

I wanted so badly to love this book. I love me some dystopian future sci-fi. But this was so painful to read, I only finished it because it is a source of pride that I don't give up on a book. Kind of wish I had less pride.

This was an okay-read. Entertaining but not mind-blowing.
I didn't like the ending very much..

Really interesting and well written book

This book was very good. Lots of organic twists and very well thought out plot points. The writing is descriptive and interesting and I'll be reading the next book as well.
