Read this book whilst on my honeymoon in Mexico! Finished it within a day. I was shocked when the book end as I didn’t think it had a clear ending. Then I realised this book was part of a series! Could not wait to start reading the next book and the next ...

Violet is such a strong female lead whom i instantly connected with. Her wit and determination really resonated with me.

One of my all time favourite series.

Teen- friendly version of Handmaid’s Tale.

Slow start but picks up about 4/5 of the way through the book. I loved Violet the strong protagonist but found it a bit too formulaic that she falls for the rugged security guy. Also, although this is a YA novel (I think) there’s one very steamy scene which seems more appropriate for an older teen. A few fun twists and turns and, although I didn’t love the book, it did leave me hanging and wanting to read the next one in the series!
adventurous slow-paced

4.5 ⭐️ I found myself really enjoying this book! I highly recommend. I’m going to read the second book, but I’m a little confused on how this story was stretched out into so many books. We will see!

First book in a series

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me engrossed until the end. I have to admit to not particularly liking the main character Violet, I found her a bit too whiny, although she did grow on me a bit. I also really disliked Lee throughout the book but Viggo, the tortured character that comes in partway through fascinated me.
The premise of the book was also really interesting with the two societies. I've already preordered the next in the series and can't wait to read it!

4.0

A society divided by gender, men rule one side of a toxic river while women rule the other. If you wish to cross, you must bend to the laws of the other side, even if it means stripping yourself of your freedom to work, travel and learn. Would you cross the border for love or family if it meant losing your basic rights? Would you cross the border for your country?

Violet has a penchant for finding trouble. When an innocent is harmed by ill will she takes matters into her own hands, but finds she is unable to contain her rage. As punishment, Violet is faced with a choice, she can take the penalty she expected to face or travel to Patrus as a Matrian spy, disguised as a simple newlywed housewife, and take back a national secret stolen from the her country by the men who despise it. Along the way, Violet discovers not all Patrians are the cold, misogynists she has been told of and finds herself having to recalculate everything she believed.

The Gender Game was a quick, fast-paced read and I found myself devouring the story in a day’s time. The writing is ligh in complexity, but good, and the new terms used to describe the world built with it were easy to learn and pronounce. The characters themselves had your typical desirable traits, but were also broken by past events and the internal struggles they have to cope with are realistic and relatable.

This book had a major plot twist near the end that I did not see coming, despite elements of it being foreshadowed along the way. It left me wanting more and I was thankfully able to jump immediately into the next book in the series! Overall, this was a fun read with an interesting dystopian themed story to tell.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I have extremely mixed feelings on this book. Throughout reading it my rating ranged from 2.5 to a 4. I really disliked the first half. I disagreed with everything the main character did to the point where I became so frustrated I would have to stop reading. Also, the first half just felt weird. The second half had a better groove and the story flowed a bit better. The ending was solid and left a good "to be continued" for the next book. I don't know if I'll read on in this series.

Comparable to “The Hunger Games”

The last series I was truly engrossed in was “The Hunger Games,” and while this series didn’t exactly pull me into it in the same way, it was still hard to put down. Will definitely be getting the next book!
