Definitely a challenging read, but also rewarding. One of the most unique writing styles I've ever read.

This book was hard to read. Not because of the subject matter, but the writing style. It needs your full concentration and ik took me to a third of the book to get into the cadence. The story, or feelings that the book tries to tell you is however hauntingly good. I really liked the greatest part of this book. But it is definitely not for everyone, so I won' t recommend.

Absolutely outstanding. Innovative in form and voice, sympathetic, authentic, and compelling.
The treatment of direct speech is incredible. Why did it never strike me as odd or jarring that a first person narrator had some prodigious memory for screeds of verbatim quotation? Burns deals with this head-on and all characters speak through middle sister's querky diction and it gives an amazing consistence to the narrative.
The stifling smothering unforgiving community at the periphery of which she finds herself because of her 'walking and reading' is expertly drawn, and despite a tier of universality created with the absence of all proper nouns, the Northern Ireland of the Troubles in the 80's is presented warts and all with incredible care.
