I think Miller's capacity for mythology retelling is really wonderful - it made the story very accessible

Such a beautiful, aching adaptation - I have so little interest in the huge recent trend for Greek myth retellings (I don't trust many authors to capture the richness of the original source material) but gave this one a go on several recommendations.
Miller's Patroclus is such an engaging narrator, with plenty of beatiful love-lorn imagery. I'm impressed by the author's ability to make Achilles sympathetic without being exactly likeable; his tragically bad decisions and insulted pride feel internally consistent in a way I hadn't grasped before in other retellings.
She also pulls off some literary magic by making the device of prophecy feel actually tense - the dramatic irony of lines like "what has Hector ever done to me?" hit hard.
Anyway I'm still very much #teamBriseis but it's nice to have a new appreciation of my least favourite Greek hero.

I’m not sure I could tell you what I expected, but this books was not what I expected. I still really enjoyed it over all. I enjoyed reading this story, which I knew a decent amount about, and getting to learn new things about it. I’m not sure I will ever be inclined to read the Odyssey, Iliad, and whatever classic stories this draws from, but I’m glad I can experience them through this wonderful adaptation/retelling.
I don’t get the hype why was everyone so excited about this book a couple years ago. Like I appreciate that there’s no spice but literally so boring. A fantasy book that you can barely tell is fantasy except when they say he was part God every chapter to remind us but we know nothing of what that means or why it matters and seems to change nothing. None of the characters are good except maybe the half horse half man.
