my initial reaction to the end of this book was 'what the actual FUCK'. if you're reading this and expecting to have a concrete, certain and clear ending then i advise you choose another book.
murakami has a writing to die for; i'm certain he could make even the most boring things interesting and the most pointless scenes make sense. i was so enamoured with it, i often failed to notice sputnik's sweetheart biggest flaw and strength: its vague, open narrative towards its second half.
it reminded me of those poems you've surely studied at least once in your student life in a literature class, one with no definite answer, no official interpretation. much like those, you can't surrender, can't cling to anything in order to actually explain what truly happens (the interviews from the author do not help - in fact, i have the feeling not even he has an answer). to some, these sort of spread out, torn narratives are good, for others not so much. i'm okay, as long as they're interesting and well written to say the least, which was the case here.

it's been a while since i read a book from the 90s (let alone a male writer in the 90s) so i'd forgotten how prevalent "man pines after manic pixie dream girl" stories were 🤪 there was some interesting parts about miu and sumire's journey together but i wish i had been experiencing their feelings through their eyes and not a male gaze. alas! not a bad book overall but 25 year old male narrators are not my thing- if it wasn't so short and counting towards my library's summer reading program i probably would have DNFed it lol
