Beautiful, sad and touching. Just enough magical realism and unresolved mystery to delight but not disappoint. And with all the beauty and wonder that Murakami instills in his pages. The mundane always seem somewhat more significant after you’ve finished a Murakami book, as he scrutinises the details and detours that make up his characters’ lives. I find that once you’ve grappled with his mysteries you can step back and appreciate this aspect of his writing.
With all of that in mind I would consider this a superb entry-level Murakami. Since he’s so “marmite” as an author, this book will either entice you to read more or you’ll never touch him again. Either way you’ll have had a great glimpse into his ethereal style.

Such a magical journey you embark on whenever you start a Murakami book. This is no exception.
We follow a man named K, he is a primary school teacher. This is a story of his unrequited love for his college friend Sumire and Sumire's love for an older woman, Miu.
The story is about Sumire and her journey mostly but the author has also made it about Miu and K, although it is told through K's perspective. All of them seem to live a normal life like most of the Murakami characters until you get these dream worlds brought to life on paper. You just get engrossed into these magical realities that he creates so seamlessly and beautifully. I don't want to reveal much just that we all want to experience other realities and like K we are stuck in our own.

★★★★★ // i just know that every time i’ll think about this book, i would get this incredibly sad and nostalgic feeling. probably the most romantic yet heartbreaking Murakami i’ve read. that ending—oh, that ending.
Can't say I enjoyed this read - as a Murakami fan, this felt like a hangover from what was no doubt a long slog writing Wind-up Bird. For a short book, Sputnik Sweetheart was over narrated. While Wind-up Bird took the reader on a visual journey through the wells and hotel corridors of the "other world" - in Sputnik Sweetheart we're left with long-winded vague narrations of the teacher but little else.
I'm working my way through Murakami chronologically and have good reason to look forward to the next book: Kafka on the Shore.
