Actually a very fun read, not ashamed

Another cute and enjoyable read from Julianne Donaldson. Her books are so easy to fly through and I really enjoyed the story.

The only thing I could say that bugged me a little bit is that some sentences get repetitive. The author tends write the same sentiment or explanation of her characters feelings several times over which doesn't lend any new info and tends to pull me out of the plot. That issue is really minor though and doesn't detract from enjoying the overall story.

Hardly knowing what i was doing, i began to hit the table with one hand as i sang in a low voice. Big cows" -thump- "lumps of meat" -thump. His eyes widened. "Give me milk" -thump- "warm and sweet."
I stopped abruptly, pressing my lips together as I realized what I had just sung. The ridiculousness of it struck me forcibly and I knew I could not goon without laughing. We stared at each other, locked in a stalemate, his eyes brimming with laughter, his lips trembling. My chin quivered. Against my will, a sound burst from me. It was a very unladylike snort.

I guess it’s a testament to the author at how wildly popular this book is despite it containing so many of the least popular tropes. Somehow, she managed to write a “I’m-not-like-the-other-girls” girly who didn’t make me cringe too terribly, a love triangle that wasn’t too annoying, and near constant miscommunication that only made me a tiny bit furious. Sure, I rolled my eyes a few times, but I was giggling my fair share too. Maybe that makes me basic? 🤷🏻‍♀️ ah well. It was bound to happen eventually.

I will say, there were some pretty big loose ends left unresolved that felt like the author just forgot to fill in. Or never intended to develop? Came across as poorly edited writing. Why was such a big hubbub made about Marianne’s inability to sing and “the event” if it was never going to be explained??? We hear about “the event” at least three times and are never told what it was. Whatever happened to her beloved locket? Did they retrieve it from the villainous what’shisface??? Why was the nefarious nephew brought up so often just to be a completely irrelevant character??? So much time was dedicated to making it seem like he was up to something and then he just? What? Keeps having an affair with the sister??? No explanation. Also. Why on earth would a highwayman try to rob a girl of an inheritance she neither had in her possession nor was even officially in line for?? And why did Phillip go to such ridiculous lengths to hide his identity when he knew she’d discover it in like 6 hours?? Oooh mystery for no reason. So romantic.

A short and sweet comfy read that had some drama and intrigue. Definitely a comfy, no high stakes read.

Uncomplicated plot, deliciously swoony as a love story.

This is officially one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I was completely enraptured with the story and Philip has definitely jumped to my top 5 most amazing book heroes. I loved everything about this book and only wanted it to go on when it finally ended.

I absolutely loved this story. It was so reminiscent of the classic literature I grew up reading. She spends so much time on the relationship between Marianne and Phillip, I couldn’t help but fall in love with him as well. This is one for the library because I can see me reading this again and again over the years.

Clean romance. Strong characters. Clever banter.

I listened to the book this time instead of reading it and I loved it once again. Great banter, awkward moments, just delightful. I just love this book.
