My thoughts via the Sunday Times: https://www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times/books/news/2021-05-16-book-news--la-jennifer-platt/
~Probably nothing going on inside, thinks Tangerine. Often the case with people who don't read fiction.~
~It wasn't just the Rwandans who expected the Americans to act a certain way. Most Japanese people think that if there's ever a major problem, America or the UN will deal with it. A feeling like the police are on the job and will take care of everything. When in reality, the US and the UN determine their course of action based not on any sense of mission or moral obligation, but on a calculation of profit and loss.~
~When you lead a group by fear the rank and file lose trust in one another. The stronger the fear, the weaker the trust. The anger and resentment at the despot is turned on people who should be allies, making the spark of rebellion less likely. Everyone just wants to keep themselves safe, their only goal is to avoid being punished, and they start watching one another.~
~My father told me something before he died...He said never trust authors who overuse sentence fragments or conversationalists who use the word irregardless.~
~People act like the common dandelion is the culprit in the drop-off of the Kanto dandelion, and that humans are merely the witnesses, but the truth is it's the humans who are to blame. Common dandelions just happen to be tough enough to live with humans. Even if the common dandelion hadn't appeared, the Kanto dandelion would still be dying off.~
~[F]or economic activity to function properly there would have to be protection for people's lives, or at least a pretence of protection. Which is why the state puts into place rules and prohibitions, one of which is the prohibition on murder...With that in mind, it makes perfect sense why wars and the death penalty are allowed. Because they serve the needs of the state. The only things that are allowed are the things the state sanctions. Which has nothing to do with ethics.~
~I don't like children who brag about not crying at movies, because no one cries at movies when they're young. People don't start getting weepy over nothing until they're older...If someone wants to brag about not crying, they should do it when they're old.~

I read this mostly on a real train, which is fun! but unfortunately, the novel itself was less than thrilling. I was vaguely rooting for (and rooting deeply against) certain characters, but it was always like.... okay, now what? I fell asleep reading it more than once. other reviewers have compared this to a kind of Japanese-Tarantino, and I guess that might just not be my bag.

This was such a fun read! Read it so quickly and am happy I waited to watch the movie until after reading, cause it can't compare imo. The twists and turns throughout were done a lot better in the book and I especially loved the extra characters that kept coming in to stir the plot.
My first DNF of 2022. I brought this book on vacation with me, started it on the plane and instantly fell asleep. Continued it on the beach, fell asleep. Again on the plane home, fell asleep. Since then it has sat on my nightstand and I haven’t had any desire to pick it back up. I just didn’t find it interesting and it obviously wasn’t holding my attention. It’s now put me in a slump where I haven’t wanted to read, and so I’m moving on.
