The beginning was quite painful to get through. Took me two weeks to read the first half the book. Reading just few pages was enough to put me to sleep. The last 35% was simply thrilling and I quickly devoured the last 30% in few hours.
Few assassinators were stuck in a train. The constant switching of power from one character to another created tension. The overall plot was strange and far-fetched which is quite the typical Japanese style. There were humors, satires, psychological games and philosophical discussion throughout which made "Bullet Train" not exactly a page-turner especially at the beginning. All the action started at about midway.
Do pay attention to the highlighted train number(s) under the heading of each chapter of the English edition (ISBN 9781419756337.) That helped to get the bearing of the characters' movement.
Bullet Train was a thrilling ride for sure!

I found this book so much better than the movie! Somehow it manages to be dark yet humorous, exciting yet thoughtful, and many of the the characters are shady but likeable. The author masterfully weaves reflections and anecdotes about society, ethics, and human behavior into the plot but then pulls the reader back into the lighthearted and adventurous tone of the story.
A 3.5 rounded up, but I did quite enjoy this book. It was fast paced and action packed, plus most of the characters were likable. The plot was fairly complex, which made it kinda hard to follow, but I liked it for the most part. The use of flashbacks were rather boring and made it annoying to get through. Most of the characters, like Nanao, Lemon, and Tangerine, were super interesting, but the others were kinda boring and hard to get through. Plus, the odd amount of transphobia was unneeded and made me feel really uncomfortable. I would recommend if you want to go into the movie with knowledge of the book and can deal with lots of rambling.
A bunch of assassins find themselves on the same highspeed train out of Tokyo, with overlapping assignments. It was okay, though it kind of builds up to a climax that doesn't really happen.
