Well, here comes ol' Timofy Pnin! Good ol' Tim Pnin...yes sir! Good ol' Pnin... How I hate him!

I was forced to read this book at such an odd and fitting time in my academic career. If you’re anything like me and you’re starting to feel the fatigue and pointlessness with everything you’re doing, with academia as a whole, this book will appeal to you in some degree. It perfectly emulates that “life is often meaningless and our institutions are all kinda bs” type of (for lack of better words) vibe. Weirdly enough I don’t think it’s a sad book, it’s kinda just self-deprecating and satirical.

wish i could give 4.5 stars!!
im a huge fan of nabokov. i agree with his take that the book shouldve ended in the death of pnin (that his publishers refused to allow to happen). would love to see his first draft of this perhaps itd be the 5 star version for me. i love nabokovs tragedy and comedy

ohh my god i feel insane. i cant articulate why because i am so sleepy but this book had a really particularly unique way in which it broke my heart that i think ill be thinking about for a while. pnin was such a well written character i really truly found myself feeling everything that happened to him so deeply. nabokov's prose is so masterfully crafted and executed i need to read more of his novels right now. also this made me want to learn russian so maybe ill redownload duolingo or some shit

Pnin fit the bill for the great Russian lit I was looking for. It was captivating, succinct, endearing and bittersweet. At first glance, I felt a patronizing pity for Pnin, but as I got to know him through the book and watched his character develop I was very endeared to him, and while he had his faults, was a full character, and indeed a worthy protagonist.

I had a super uneven experience with this book. Parts were outstanding and parts I just did not understand what was happening. I think Nabokov is an author for me to revisit in 10 years. When I was with it, this was just outstandingly funny and clever and incisive. I suspect the whole book is like this I just lack the contextual reading and experiences.

All about the character descriptions and the language.

"It warmed my heart, the Russian-intelligentski way he had of getting into his overcoat; his inclined head would demonstrate its ideal baldness, and his large, Duchess of Wonderland chin would firmly press against the crossed ends of his green muffler to hold it in place on his chest while, with a jerk of his broad shoulders, he contrived to get into both armholes at once."
