This book was recommended to me as being similar to the wingfeather saga. I agree, there are some similarities, but this trilogy is definitely a King David reimagining, whereas the wingfeather saga was an original concept. The way the author narrated it was humorous, and I like the segments that involved the feechiefolk, but I wish the illusions to the Bible were more subtle. I’d rather just read a retelling without fantasy elements than one that just follows scripture very closely but adds in whimsical, fantasy elements. Unsure if I will continue.

I read this aloud to the boys, ages 7 and 5. My 7yo loved it but most of it was lost on my 5yo. He liked the bits with Dobro the feechie boy the best :) It is a fictional version of when Saul chooses young David the shepherd to be king. Instead, King Darrow chooses Aidan to be the Wilderking. It is fantastically well-written and I really enjoyed it! I'd like to continue the series but maybe in a year or so when my youngest would be more interested. Our favorite part was when they were all in the mine, singing their miners' song.

This story really reminds me of David and Goliath. One of my favorite bible stories

Read this to see if my girls would like it and I loved it! Retelling of David and Goliath.

Enjoyed the second listen with the girls and they loved it too!
