Such a great read aloud! Kids were excited to find the Biblical stories in the story.

I read this book as part of a six week writing course by the author, Jonathan Rogers, who runs “The Habit Membership” for writers through the Rabbit Room. It was a very fun read! The story is a creative adaptation of the biblical David and Goliath story, and is one of three books which parallel the life of David in full. I have not read the remaining books in the series, but was very happy to be introduced to them. The story of David is already one of my very favorites in the Bible, so being able to put on creatively-colored glasses to imagine what it might have felt like to be in David’s shoes as a boy-declared-king was a real treat. I laughed out loud for much of the story, and yes, even teared up during the climax. This is a story I am excited to add to my book collection for my kid(s) in the future.

This is a fun adventure that follows the story line of a young king David, but it's not about David of Bethlehem, it's about Aidan of Corenwald.
Corenwalders feel like ancient English.
Corenwald seems to be a lot like Mississippi.
There are feechies, a wild sort of people that stay hidden from the Corenwalders out of a fear of being civilized.
There is a giant & adventures in caves and in swamps.
Jonathan Rogers writing has an old world classic feel to it that reminds me of Clive Staples.

I do want to say that the story has almost no females, none with significant roles.
It is a delightful read & I'm eager to move onto the second book in the series.

This was my second read of this book and this time on audio. It is such a different experience and I loved it. The author’s narration is perfect and fits the story so well. The feechie folk are still my favorite part and I’m excited to get into the rest of this series. My kids love this story and it is a great choice for young readers.

Short review: a good fantasy book that is loosely based on a retelling of the biblical story of David. Targeted toward upper elementary school, this is worth reading and would make a good real aloud for slightly younger kids as well.
