This was a fantastic book. It is a fictional retelling of the story of David being anointed King of Israel as a boy, fighting Goliath and defeating the Philistine army. It is the first book in a trilogy. My kids wanted me to keep reading chapter after chapter, even though they know the story of David, they couldn't wait to see what happened next in this fictional retelling. I highly highly recommend for kids are 8 up or as a family read aloud my youngest is 4 and loved it.
We loved this! In addition to a great adventure and fabulous vocabulary, it’s a fictionalization of King David and I’m sure the kids will remember this!
My family listened to this book on audio during a long car ride, and everyone—from the adults down to the 3-year-old—loved it. Great fun and beautiful messages: “Live the life that unfolds before you” and “love goodness more than you fear evil.” Plus, feechies! :)

Clearly based on the story of David from the Bible, this book fleshes out a decent medieval story. Shepherd boy kills a panther, ancient wise prophet says he is going to be a king, he kills a giant with a sling, saves the day, and is invited to be a companion for the prince. There are two more books in the series and I will probably read them, but not now.
Good story, I like the Feechiefolk, though I'm not sure what their parallel is in the Biblical version. The Bark of the Bog Owl is slightly mysterious, but I am pretty sure the bog owl doesn't exist. I liked the cave & gunpowder stories.

SERIES REVIEW:
One of the most unique fantasy worlds I've read, especially the feechies! This series is a loose retelling of the Biblical account of King David, but different enough to be surprising. The ending of bk. 3 is one of my favorite sections of a novel, ever.
Recommended for middle grade readers, family read alouds, and anyone who wants a fun adventure rife with beauty, truth, and goodness. Content: mild violence, character death, rude humor.
Live the life that unfolds before you. Love goodness more than you fear evil.

This is a hugely creative and rollicking romp into a fun and imaginative world! I enjoyed the retelling of the David and Goliath story, and appreciated how the author brought elements of it to life I’d not thought about before.
Looking forward to the next book in the series; glad they’re all out so I can binge read accordingly!
