We're clearly getting to the point where we're going to start tying all the previous books together. This is both good and bad.

Re-reading some childhood favorites because... well... although Mercedes Lackey has in many ways become a bit cookie cutter, her early books were charming and addressed issues like feminism and growing up to follow your own path quite a lot. This one stuck out to me most especially because the main character starts off young, but finds a new path when fully an adult. A little bit familiar.

Pretty much fine, but it has to move fast to cover a lot of ground. Lackey really struggles with this kind of story, and usually you feel like you're reading a summary of a book instead of the actual book. This one wasn't so bad.

I absolutely adore this book. It is my single favorite by Lackey. Kero discovers who she is and stays grounded in that. She may question her decisions (really, who doesn't have doubts at some point?), but she's consistent and she's centered in her desire to be her own woman.

This is still one of my favorite Valdemar books. I love Kerowyn's strength, honesty and forceful relationship with Need. I would actually recommend reading this book after the Arrows of the Queen books, but before I read the Oathbreakers ones. It fits historically and you can pick up more of the Need stories later. If you love Valdemar, don't miss it!

This is a pretty good stand-alone story in this world. You get a taste of pretty much everything.

SpoilerAs somebody who likes (and has read) this story a lot, I very much enjoy how it joins the two separate story lines into one, and how it flows into the events at the end of the Arrow's series
