i feel bad giving this book 5 stars because it deserves more
its perfection, its a masterpiece, its the most beautiful novel ive ever read (also who tf do i think i am praising joyce

"He wanted to cry quietly but not for himself: for the words, so beautiful and sad, like music."

Humans are often torn between the world of facts and figures, and the one which is born from their endless streams of thoughts and imagination. Adhering to one is never easy.

This is a coming of age, semi-autobiographical novel following a non-linear narrative of a young boy who could be seen living in the latter world only to come across an unavoidable pull of the real world. This is a story of his struggle to find his place in a world which at times seems absurd to him.

James Joyce's unbelievable quality of transforming observation into descriptions, his brilliance in capturing loss of childhood which comes with maturity, and his views on religious, moral, and intellectual disparities among individuals keeps us bound to the story of this young artist.

The 2nd book in my challenge to read one book per month from my Modern Library collection.

Ever read a book & listen to the audiobook at the same time? I did on this one. It's my first time reading Joyce. Not an easy read, so having someone reading it along with me helped. I also “cheated“ and watched a couple of video reviews along the way to aid understanding (and googled stuff). Ended up liking it a lot.

The audiobook, by the way, was from Librivox - the version read by Peter Bobbe. He really did an excellent job verbalizing the text, that, at times, was hard to figure out from the words on the page. Earned the almost 5 stars the recording has. He also had a slightly different edit than what I had before me in writing, which jarred a bit each time a difference came up, but they were few enough and inconsequential enough not to matter.

I have got maybe 50 pages to go, but I am dnf-ing this book. It is much to lyrical and poetical to be interesting to me. The language ist pretty, I can see that, but everything else is lost on me. I am sure there is a lot of hidden meaning to unpack, but I am just not enjoying the book, since half the time I have no idea what is going on.
