This was gut punch, after gut punch, after gut punch. I feel like I’ve been shattered into a million little pieces and I will never recover from this. I don’t think I’ve ever been possessed with so much anger while reading a book. I loved this so much.

Such a beautiful book. The writing is amazing, and the story being told is so captivating. I was immediately pulled in from the first page, and felt emotional the whole ride through.

There are many things I could not relate with, but I understood everything, and I felt like I was there -- spectating, watching, experiencing.

I've learned about myself and my own relationships just from seeing the perspectives in this book.

This is a unique book that looks at trauma - past and present - and dissects it in prose like poetry.

Let's get this out of the way: this book is heavy.  The content is very heavy, and you need to check the trigger warnings before jumping in.

I had to set this down several times and sit with it.  Not because I didn't like it, but because some of the feelings were a lot.

"Pain is faster than light, and I wish people would not fault me for things I can’t forget or explain."

This memoir is written beautifully.  Mailhot does an amazing job weaving together thoughts and feelings in the form of letters and essays.  It's fragmented and non-linear, so if you like concise prose, this one is not for you.  You're reading her work almost as if you are remembering a memory with her and going through all of the rollercoaster of emotions that she dealt with regularly.  It almost reads like poetry.
