Zombies are not my genre, but I really like this author and wanted to give it a try. Overall, I felt it was well written, not gory, and perfect for an upper elementary reader. I liked that the story had closure, but also left you with questions so you immediately want to start the next book in the series! The audio narrator was good.

This was awesome!

For being supposedly a Middle Grade children's book, this is so much more than I expected. The characters and plot are full and detailed. It's full of genuine action scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat as much as any action movie. And it's funny! Genuinely funny and unique.

This story is actually pretty special.

Loved this well-written, action-packed zombie slayer book with a fierce female protagonist and her brainy crew. Appropriate for middle grades, if they don't scare too easily, with no romance & a little NYC culture for good measure.

My first DNF. I loved Ponti’s other book, City Spies, so I decided to give this one a try despite not liking Zombies or gore (not that this is overly gory). However, I was not enjoying the descriptions of zombies (and the dead) and it got a bit much. So I decided to stop. The book is definitely well written and I enjoyed other aspects of it, so this is not a reflection of the book but rather an issue with the audience. This just isn’t the book for me.

Feels predictable.

This suffers a little bit from "first book in a series" syndrome (as in it takes a while for the world building to finish), but it is very fun. Looking forward to the next two.

I really liked this! It was perfect to read after The Kite Runner because it was a lighter mood. A nice middle grade book that has enough action to keep its readers entertained! I'm excited to continue on with the trilogy!

REVIEW written for WASHYARG (Washington Young Adult Review Group):

Beginning cut not for spoilers, just because it's a plot summary and you can skip it if you just want to hear what I thought of the book :)

SpoilerPrecocious middle-schooler Molly Bigelow is kind of an odd kid. She goes to a special math and science school called MIST (Metropolitan Institute of Science and Technology), spends her free time hanging out in the morgue her late-mother worked in, and still has time for friends and family. As if her life isn’t odd enough, suddenly, upper classmen Natalie, Alex, and Grayson have suddenly taken an interest in her. At first, Molly is super excited that she gets the opportunity to hang out with high schoolers – but then she finds out they don’t just want to be friends. They want her to join their OMEGA team, and join in the fight in policing and protect Manhattan’s undead population.
Ponti’s fiery heroine is sassy and sarcastic, and upper-elementary and middle school readers will instantly find themselves sucked into the slightly scary (but not too much) alternate Manhattan created by the author. In many ways this is Buffy the Vampire Slayer (or rather…Molly the Zombie Slayer?) for tweens, and readers will itching to get their hands on the next in the series (entitled Blue Moon), arriving on shelves in October 2013!
