Sigh. We're back again folks.
Watch out Tom Holland, because Nera Veronese is coming for that Spiderman title.
No really.
Tell me you weren't thinking about Spidey senses the moment Nera mentions her "tingling sensation" whenever she can "feel Kai watching her". Did we somehow cross over into the paranormal/supernatural category? This in line with absolutely gagging every time Kai used cub as a term of endearment for Nera. Quite literally from page uno.
Reader I felt ill.
But, I'll give Neva this. She almost had me in the first half.
Suffering from acute boredom, that is.
I was never an advocate for Kai - he was merely an afterthought since I barely recall the guy in his introduction to the series. You have your run of the mill stalker romance and a case of insta-attraction. She was already losing me there.
The cub almost sent me packing. Not to mention the over zealous use of the term "my girl".
I remained. Because we may have just gotten a messy kind of slow burn that I kind of almost ate up. Their build up took over a year to see any progression and honestly I did feel my heart ache for Kai when he shared his frustration of not being able to read and write. I can praise Neva for that. For displaying very real insecurities, struggles, mental and physical health issues and disabilities across the spectrum. The execution isn't always perfect but her aim isn't always off.
I can appreciate the focus on a flesh-ier plot with substantial detail and the different angle on the Cosa Nostra. We face a more tame, soft hearted family and a Don who gets loser Dad of the year award not because of his mafia tendencies, but simply because he's just stupid. He fails to rule with an iron fist and that truly is his downfall.
In truth, I did enjoy the second half a tad more but this pairing just wasn't doing it for me. I found myself skimming it a lot but retained information I'd need for Zara and Massimo's book which apparently is required as they both play side by side and should be read together.
I purely gave that second star for Salvatore Ajello's cameo because let's face it, he's still the King and my favourite of the Perfectly Imperfect men.

2⭐️ finished it, glad I didn't pay $ for it, wouldn't buy the next book in the series. If this was a TV show that was on when I walked into the room, I wouldn't have changed the channel.
3⭐️ this book was fine! I'm agnostic about reading the next one. If the library has it I might or might not read it.

Oh this was NUTS. When I realised what the interconnections were, what they’d done and what happened, I LOST my shit. Absolutely insane and brilliantly done.

Hands down my favorite so far of this series. Ahh, Kai, you sweet, murdery cinnamon roll
