Another great addition to this universe. It's a cop book but at least on some level tries to confront both the ethical and practical limitations and problems with the concept of police.

I think this book was a fine installment in my Reynolds journey; however, I think it also definitely marks the end of "must read" compulsion for his Space Operas. I don't think this is an indictment of the book, because it is a good story with good characters. Instead, I think my reticence is a product of an evolved palette. I'm no longer cloud with the newness of Reynolds' worlds—the sheer awesomeness of ideas I could never have before comprehended—leaving me with a fine story and fine dialogue and fine characters. This read will be enjoyable for any fans of hard sci-fi and Reynolds.
This book was a bit slow and I made the mistake of picking up book 2 in the series. But still it did not leave me happy, it’s possible I may not pick up any others from this series.
This book follows soon after the first Tom Dreyfus story. By this time, you're more familiar with the main characters, so you can explore their personalities a little further through the story. The story focuses on a new crisis that grips the Glitter Band, with a seemingly unrelated side story.
The emphasis in this story seemed to be more on Dreyfus, his two deputies, and the Supreme Prefect, than the underlying crisis. It felt like a bit of a reverse of the first Tom Dreyfus story in this respect, and made this book a little more sentimental than the first.
I like how Reynolds' books are a little edgier than other popular sci-fi books that I've read (not exactly a fair representation of sci-fi generally, though). This one didn't feel as edgy. Still, I enjoyed the book and was a little surprised to see that I finished it in about five days.
