I’m enjoying playing Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth at the moment, a game about an ex-yakuza trying to make things better for others but getting involved in a lot of scrapes. I was recommended by a friend to try this manga as it’s along similar lines – a yakuza called ‘The Immortal Dragon’ leaves that world behind to become…a house husband. He’s involved in the cooking, cleaning and shopping but along the way he seems to get caught up in righting various injustices and gaining a fan or two.

I haven’t read manga for ages, but these volumes were a lot of fun. The chapters are short and funny, looking at various aspects of the house husband’s life from shonky salesmen to meeting acquaintances from his other life. I did feel that I raced through these (being used to novels and not having a lot of time to read) but I did try to slow down and appreciate the backgrounds and drawing, as well as practise my reading of the various signs etc in Japanese.

Volume 1 is a great introduction to the story, capitalising on the problems an ex-yakuza may face when trying to start a new life. He’s recognised by former enemies, idolised by a junior yakuza and saves the day multiple times while barely being aware of it. He also starts to realise that despite his cute aprons with dogs and cats, he might look a little scary to others…and it’s not just the sunglasses indoors...

The artwork is amazing, and the plot is so interesting. The humour, surprisingly for me, did actually make me smile and wasn’t too cringe-y, or out of place, so i loved that aspect of this. However, nothing ACTUALLY happened? I understand it is a comedy and they are usually slow and uneventful but this felt so short and unplanned? I think if i carry on, and get to know the main character a bit more, then maybe there is no need for a plot- the plot may simply be the gags and jokes within this manga? Overall i did enjoy this manga though! 3.5⭐️ and i will read on

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Once upon a time, Tatsu was known as the Immortal Dragon, the most feared Yakuza boss in all of Japan.

Now?

He will cut you down for the best bargain so he can continue to make the most kawaii of bento boxes.

Tatsu is now living his happiest life as a househusband while his wife, Miku, is a designer and careerwoman; they are happily married and share an apartment, have a cat named Gin, and Tatsu does his best to keep the household running smoothly.

His methods are just, well, a little unorthodox.

This brilliant first volume in the popular "The Way of the Househusband" manga will make readers laugh as Tatsu takes on ordinary household tasks and scenarios with his own unique twist. Along the way, old gang members try to figure out what his long game is. What brooding thoughts are going on behind those big dark sunglasses and scowling expression? (Really, he's just debating on whether to do pork or chicken for dinner. Depends on what coupons are available at the grocery store.)

Needless to say, there are shenanigans ahead.
