Weapon by Lynette Noni

“Weapon” is the sequel to Lynette Noni’s “Whisper”, her only other book to lie outside of her Medoran Chronicles. Unlike said series, which is set in a fantasy world, “Whisper” and “Weapon” are set in modern day Sydney, yet still manages to create another fantasy plot line hidden directly under well known monuments such as Centrepoint Tower.

I admit, I had my doubts for a while. When I was about 50 pages from the end, I was sure that Lynette Noni would have to write a third book in the instalment, there was just so much more to fit in such a small amount of pages. However, Noni was adamant to finish it all in two books, so the ending was a little rushed to fit everything in, yet somehow it didn’t take away my interest or lose me in any way, in fact I think it actually worked to further them. Let’s be real, life has a habit sometimes of dumping things on you all at once, expecting you to struggle through it, and that’s exactly what happened here: Alyssa, the main character, found all of the answers she was looking for, realising just how interwoven all of their problems were, and managed to save the day at the last moment. It was thrilling, exciting, it had my heart pounding in anticipation, and I loved it!

To be fair, some points were rather predictable, the betrayal of a certain character, the endgame ship, but that just meant I was all the more shocked at the twists I couldn’t predict. You think you have it all figured out, then BOOM, everything changes. The book works hard to keep you on your toes, and oh boy, it does.

 Reader’s Notes:

– this is the 2nd book of a duology & must be read in order

– this is told from Alyssa’s point of view

– there are about 3 curse words

Review:

Oh my goodness, this was such a surprise filled conclusion to this series! I loved getting to see all the different kinds of powers Speakers could have and trying to follow the mysterious threads of what was going on around Alyssa. I loved not knowing what was true verses was could have been fabricated by another Speaker’s powers until someone confessed. I loved the addition of new characters and what roles they played in Alyssa’s story. I would have loved to have a chance for more actual romance developing (in this book, there was some in the first) between Alyssa and the guy she wanted a relationship with by the end of the book, but it was still a satisfying ending in the sense of an ‘and they rode off into the sunset’ kind of an ending.

Summary:

Alyssa Scott barely escaped Lengard, but had to leave behind all the people who helped her grow into her powers. She can’t leave them at the mercy of Kendall Vanik, the power hungry scientist that has been doing experiments on them all for years. But that’s what the unofficial leader of the Remnants, Kael, seems to be doing. Even as Alyssa learns the reasons for Kael’s actions, new things pop into Alyssa’s sphere that make her question everything she’s been told. Who can she trust to do the right thing if she doesn’t know what’s true?

After reading the first book in less than 24 hours I was so eager to start 'Weapon'. I often find sequels to be make or break, I often get bored or don't enjoy them as much as the first book, but this was brilliant. I honestly didn't think Noni could get any better, and somehow she did! Started the book at 9:00pm and read straight through to the end, finishing at 11:00pm!!! 2 hours!! I couldn't put it down! It was an absolutely incredible book, and I wish that there was more!

this was SO GOOD. i did predict parts of the ending and found myself internally screaming at some of the characters to open their eyes and see the red flags right in front of them but nevertheless i thoroughly enjoyed it.
