DNF at 17% (Chapter 5). Not rating an unfinished book.
I really enjoyed the first book Whisper. I had some issues with it this second installment though. Mainly with the speaker powers. There was a moment where they are talking about speaking and summoning people. So if Alyssa needed to talk to someone and she can't find them, just say their name and they'll appear before you. But you can't do that because it causes irreversible damage and misplaces organs. Fair enough, you need limitations. But then she says
"Needless to say, I haven't attempted to summon anyone from Lengard. I'm not even sure Vanik would deserve such fate."
Um what? She can kill Vanik? Yes, he does deserve death? He's evil remember. He tortured you. Killed family and friends.
Then later in a following chapter Kael says
"It's why you can't just imagine Vanik keeling over here; there are too many variables between you and him, distance just one of them"
So now she can't summon him?
I felt like the powers were not consistent enough. I found myself confused on what they can actually do and what their limitations were. Alyssa is so powerful and dangerous and everyone should scared of her as Noni keeps repeating. But I don't really see that. The first action battle Ward just suppresses her powers so she's useless. Might pick back up in the future.

Again, all very exciting. One of my favourite things is revelations about hidden background information, this book is riddled with such instances. Love it

Amazing pacing and a fun read but can’t deny I’m a little disappointed about the lack of development of Alyssa’s love life. The ending is happily ever after with Ward, yet through this whole book there’s no build up or reflection of that. At times she seemed like she didn’t even like him that much?? Or that perhaps she even liked Kael more? With no clear idea of Alyssa’s feelings it made the end conversation with Ward a little harder to appreciate. But on a positive note I loved Riley and the memories of Smith in Alyssa’s past, those scenes were really strong. Overall the plot and twists were clever and well thought out, making it an exciting read.

i enjoyed the first one more, i found there were more plot twists in this one. again, took a while to get into it, but very much enjoyed. i feel the ending was slightly rushed and i think another book would be great to tie it all in
