One of my favs of this series!
Joarr is so much fun and I really enjoyed being outside while still being at orc mountain. Gwyn also has a good strong mind of her own which I appreciate. I liked meeting more of the other women, and having Stella's story expanded on.
I feel like Joarr suddenly not being Skai was fairly confusing because we just ended the previous book with him as Skai. It was still cool to see his development of his relationship to his clan. Idk if he needed to be a Seer though.
Finley Fenn's writing has improved so much and this book is one of my favourites of hers.
A major critique I have is the I trust him, I don't trust him, I want to fuck let's fuck, I never want to see him ever again, rinse and repeat plot that we've seen in her previous books in this series can get really repetitive. It's a bit like emotional whiplash. Finley brings the angst though so it'd be out of character to have a woman come willingly to orc mountain with the explicit intent of establishing a relationship.
Gwyn does say he lied to her but tbh I can't work out how he did? Like orcs are a different culture and none of these books have women who respect or understand that which annoys me. So that's why it lost half a star. Also thankful she doesn't run away from him omg so much running in the previous books!!!!. the spice was brilliant too!

This book was so engaging but so terrifyingly intense. I didn't even feel like I could breathe til I was nearly 90% of the way through. This is sooooo emotionally taxing.

I love how the conflict is solved with conversation and compromise rather than with bloodshed. Gwyn is so sweet and hard-working, and gets caught up in her own head way too much which is incredibly relatable. The way her selfharm is written is very raw and relatable, as is her recovery. Joarr is funny and sweet, and these two are by far my favourite couple under Orc Mountain

i picked this up because a fave author of mine recommended this a week ago. however, i hated the heroine so much that i couldn’t finish it. the author prefaced that the heroine was a smart character—that’s what drew me into reading this. however, she was far from it.
it was implied that her fiancé was cheating on her the majority of their engagement—i’m assuming it was years of relationship as they were childhood friends. however, she willingly chose to stay with him and even welcomed him back into her bed numerous times. it would be different if she didn’t know she was manipulated, okay? the thing is that, she knew. she even knew what he was doing when he was doing it. his false words meant to sweeten her. she just played along.
in the end, she left him which i commended her for. that’s where the book picked up. it’s when she got caught up in a stupid shit. again. she met an orc who barged into her house, sucked his finger—you know all that erotic shit. the next day, she succumbed to his seduction. at first i was like, for real? the book was only at the 11 percentage mark, but then i was like, nah as she should! she was in an unfulfilling relationship after all.
however she got all weird after that.

something brittle seemed to crack, deep in her chest, and there was an odd, quivering constriction in her throat. and good gods, she was not going to weep over an orc, and especially not while the orc dispassionately stood there and watched, and behaved as though this had meant nothing to him at all. as though she had meant nothing.
first of all, why was she so dramatic? she consented to sex with an orc, and orc who she met just the day before. she didn’t know him from adam. they were strangers! so i was confused as to why she was being acting like a betrayed girlfriend. it would be different had the author of this book developed their relationship first but they didn’t. because of this they made her reaction seemed so odd.
i looked up reviews to see if it gets any better but apparently she stayed her stupid self, and the hero ended up being a manipulative asshole. so yeah. fucking done.

I took longer to finish this one because I didn’t want it to end 😭 These orcs have been all I’ve thought about for the past week. This one felt a little bit different, a bit more lighthearted with a lot of moments of laughter and tenderness. Still, it does also deal with difficult topics like self-harm and women’s reproductive health, so keep that in mind. Gwyn’s midwifery is genuinely impressive, as well as her herbalist knowledge, and the author clearly did a lot of research on these topics. Joarr felt a bit different than he did when he appeared in the last book, but I loved him! A mushroom specialist who knows how to cook 🤩 And there was also a lot of Stella and Silfast (from the novella), and we get to see more of their relationship beyond the…intimate.
The smut in this one is actually a lot more tame (in quality if not by quantity) than in the other ones, but honestly by normal standards it’s still pretty over the top. And some scenes were so funny to me that I had to keep closing the app in disbelief. It was fun!!
