It’s always interesting to read a classic novel. I particularly find it interesting when I see men write from the perspective of women. This wasn’t exactly a feminist breaking-glass-ceilings novel, and I thought it was interesting the way that the narrative style of the women matches exactly what a man would think the narrative style of a woman was in the 17 and 1800s. Overall the storyline was very straightforward, and I think that my perspective of this book is tainted by the jaded nature of the Dracula storyline. But reading it, and understanding the context in which it was written, coming at it from a place with no expectations, and an open mind made for an enjoyable, if at times painfully male gaze, read.

Don’t come at me - I know this is a classic. But man I struggled with it. I think the way it’s written, as just multiple diary entries, is what I struggled with most.

The story is good - we all know it. But I really wanted a little more action I think, and a lot less sitting around and speculating. I was also very disappointed in the ending. It felt very anti climactic.

But I wanted to be able to say I had read this one - and now I can. I just wish I was a little less disappointed in it.

I hated every second of this book.

The epistolary aspect of it is genius… if it was a shorter book and had some actual depth apart from the mystery elements.

This book is just heavily overwritten and could have been chopped in half with the exact same plot and story.

The only real kudos I can give it is that it originated and created the vampire. And that is all I needed it for.

There isn’t nearly enough vampire or horror in this though, it’s a gothic mystery book and idgaf what anyone wants to tell me about it.
