Strong Knives Out vibes in the disfunctional rich family with an outsider main character. Personally I could have done without the romance being so heavily featured or there at all but I guess it's YA? But the plot is fast and fun, and I'll definitely be picking up the next one.

I wasn't a fan of the characters. They were either incredibly annoying or snobby and pretentious. I never really connected with any of them. The protagonist was bland, and so was the unnecessary love triangle (which was weird because it pitted brothers against each other). Also
I really hated Emily. Not only was she homophobic but she was all around a horrible person
. The mystery was also lame. There weren't really any fun puzzles, and the reason for Avery's inheritance was really underwhelming and not worth the trouble of reading. The only interesting bit was the sequel hook, but I'm not sure if I want to read the sequel. I will say that the pacing of the book was fast enough to keep me engaged, but the payoff was not worth sitting through.

This book was really cool. I loved the dramatic dark academia vibes and the old-money family mystery of this book. So many twists and turns that worked really well. It was a lot of fun, super easy to read, and just an all around good time.  The type of book that made me excited to read. Can’t wait to read the sequel.
Spoiler & prediction: Since Tobias II is the man Avery played chess with, I think that he is also her father

Overall I thought this book was ok. The story was intriguing. I ended up figuring out the twists, which is fine, I generally do with mysteries.

I think, personally, my biggest issue with this book is that I didn't end up connecting with any of the characters. I didn't really find anyone that likable and I felt like there was very little even given to us about Avery as a character and so she fell pretty flat for me. The only character I really loved was Xander and he was hardly in the book at all. So yeah, overall, this is a fun and face paced read which I enjoyed but was left wishing for more in terms of character development.
