I found it poetic and inspiring - it made me want to cook, although I found the actual food content to be nothing new, nothing I have not read already in the Guardian, and most of the tips boiling down to (pun intended) making soup or stock. I will probably go back to it and browse through it again when feeling uninspired by my cupboard and fridge.

This book gently shares a philosophy of using food well and eating well. Adler advocates living well but without excess. Lunch could be an egg and cheese on bread with a little greens, but it's a single egg, just enough cheese, and a slice of bread, not a huge sandwich, a bag of chips, and a soda beside.

Although Adler's food ethic is not directly one that is completely compatible with food justice concerns, it's probably more closely adaptable to one than some of the more mainstream food ethics like those of Michael Pollen. For example, she is an advocate of boiling (done right) as a cooking method, and one of her central tenants is making the ends of one meal become the beginning of another.

In addition to all that, I was salivating for nearly all of the recipes. Yummy!

3.5 stars. Lovely prose and interesting perspective on making food. I could feel the author's love for food and the process of making in every sentence. Very inspiring! But as for me, too much emphasis on bread and pasta and some other unhealthy food (like overcooked veggies that lose all their vitamins in the process).

I found the writing style of this book a bit too florid and the wording occasionally confusing. However, if you can muddle through the prose, the ideas are well worth the read.
