ARC REVIEW
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5/5 Star Rating

Heartless Monster is the first book in the Misfits series. This book has some of my favorite elements. Enemies to lovers, Bully, Step-siblings, and a sports romance, as well as more!

This book is about Rome and Elodie. Rome and Elodie meet one night, and she thinks he's a player and wants nothing to do with him. When something to Elodie, a mystery stranger helps her out. Elodie tries to help this person but ends up ruining his life.

Now Elodie and Rome's parents are together and Rome hates Elodie. Elodie doesn't understand why. With them forced together, secrets come out.

I loved getting to know Elodie and Rome's story. I can't wait to see what happens next in the series.

Oh I love a good stepbrother romance. This had all the aspects you love in a book. The angst, mystery, suspense, and enemies to lovers.

This story starts with our female main character, Elodie Astor, going to a party not in her neck of the woods, and getting assaulted by three guys. She had a knight in shining armor come out of the woods and help her. She escapes.

Then the story jumps to her family being blended with Mr. Cromwell and his four boys. Her and her two sisters and mom make it like the new age Brady Brunch. Right off the bat, her now classmate, stepbrother who is a twin, Rome hates her. He has made it his mission to destroy her life. On top of starting a new school, juggling a new family life, and finding her place, Elodie keeps getting threatening messages, gets drugged at a party, and has damage done to her car twice as warnings. Rome knows he isn’t the culprit but he’s the only one who can destroy her life. Somewhere along the line, Rome catches feelings, and makes it his mission to figure out what’s going on.

The twists and turns this story takes make you stay on the edge of your seat and you keep turning the pages trying to figure out what happens. This was a great thrilling, love story. I love the way Rachel illustrates her stories, you are painted an incredibly detailed picture. I can’t wait for the next book (stand alone but has similar characters in the next!)

It’s been quite some time since I’ve read a true bully romance, one in which the reasons behind the aggression and hard feelings felt by the MMC are completely reasonable or justifiable to the reader.

Rome is a fantastic mmc, he has so many interesting layers and I really enjoyed peeling them away one by one.
Elodie is a typical first-born/ type-A/perfectionist, control freak, who eventually learns to let her hair down, but was also relatable to those of us with her very specific brand of uptight and strategic way of living.
I found her likable, and loved that she never backed down to Rome, yet still maintained a level of empathy which allowed her to gain his trust and heart by the end of the story.
It was a relief that their relationship wasn’t viewed as taboo when it came to their immediate family members, and I appreciated it differed in that sense from other books in this genre, giving it a level of uniqueness.
All of the characters were interesting as individuals, and their family dynamic was special.
I laughed, had emotional moments, and enjoyed the level of suspense and mystery the story offered, as this was a great secondary plot.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to any others in this world.

One year ago, Elodie was saved by a stranger after a party. A party where she pushed the star quarterback into the pool in front of everyone. And now…that quarterback is her new stepbrother. And he hates her. Rome is determined to break Elodie because he blames her for losing his spot on the team. But he’s not the only one out to break her. I was lucky enough to read this book early. A bully romance with some twists, I was drawn in from the beginning. As a reminder, always read trigger warnings before reading any book.

Ok, I’m not really into a lot of dark, taboo or bully romance, but here we are. And with stepsiblings? Let’s go!

Now, there was one point in this where I had to step back and say, “whoa” this is a lot for teenagers. Eloise and Rome were just doing things and so were other characters. It was a lot. Until I realized I did a lot of that when I was younger and knew people who did as well.

That’s when this book just became really easy for me to read. Usually darker content can trigger me, but I have been working on things and I was able to enjoy it.

The ending was a tiny bit unexpected, but it also felt a little rushed. Still, we got a story that I had a good time reading.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I reallyyyy wanted to like this one but it just wasn't a favorite. For context I am WELL versed on all things enemies to lovers, bully, taboo, any and most things dark romance. THIS book tho def had some things that made me hesitate.

Pros: It had some great tropes. Taboo/forbidden and enemies to lovers romance. I love prologues that are from the past and not the future. V helpful in understanding some things about a story. I loved the sibling content, it was an enjoyable aspect of the plot. I enjoyed that the parents for once were good people and there was low angst in relation to people finding out the main characters are together.

Cons: this could have done with some more developmental edits. Some parts felt rushed and could have used some more detail. There were some things that were included from the past but as the reader it was very hard to understand because it wasn't included in prologue so like how were we supposed to know. Now I devour enemies to lovers and bully romance books but this book had some moments that felt like in real life the man would have gotten physical. I knowwww its fiction but the MMC very clearly had anger issues and while there was some bullying, honestly the writing at times made me question if he was going to physically attack the FMC. The reasoning for the bullying oml. Now in most bully romance the reasoning almost always falls short for me. But when it has to do with miscommunication it drives me UP A WALL. Also, if I remember correctly the characters are in HS which I didn't know at first and is a plot point I try to avoid.

Overall, I wasn't at DNF point but I needed to see some more detail and hashing out of some of the plot. The bully portion could have used some tweaking as well. I have read the author in the past and liked her books I just wasn't in love with this one.
