I had a number of problems with this book: it was idealized without being utterly charming; I couldn’t place the village time or in the world; the language in places read like a Jane Austen novel and in others, inexplicably, as modern. I couldn’t buy the relationship between the main characters, either when they were fighting or when they were getting along. The whole thing had a conservative “life was grand when everyone did things the old ways” that I find saccharine and destructive.
However, several of my (homeschooling mom) friends really enjoyed it. So, hey...

I loved the first half
It started out as a wonderful story. The end was disappointing and lacked closure. Maybe the author will do a sequel to explain "the awakening" and expand on the relationship with the man in the chair.

Reread 2020. It didn't really hold up to a reread. I still love the town, but the book overall felt more preachy this time through.
Loved. Recommend to all my friends. And I need a sequel.

I wanted to like this book. I kept reading hoping to find a resolution, or even a clear definition of what the heck was happening, but to no avail. To this day I'm really not certain what the point was. Was my problem an issue with a translation? I don't think so. I think, despite the lovely world that was created, and beautiful language used, I just missed the point. If there was one.
had some moments, but the underlying religious motif wore on me.
