I am not a huge consumer of audiobooks or memoir; I usually prefer to consume fiction and to do so visually. However, when I stumbled across Sam Heughan's memoir in this format and saw that he did his own reading, I decided that I needed to give it a go. I'm tremendously glad that I did.

Heughan structures his memoir by fluctuating between describing his journey along the West Highland Way and recounting large portions of his life's journey. Readers are introduced to the early parts of Heughan's life as he recounts his upbringing with his mother and how her return to her roots as an artist encouraged him to pursue his love of acting.

I wasn't sure quite what to expect from the acting portion of the memoir. To confess it, I was unfamiliar with a lot of his work prior to Outlander, which was my first introduction. However, I found the way that he recounted the build of his career to be fascinating, and he did it in a style that was incredibly entertaining. I really enjoyed the symmetry between his journey along the West Highland Way and his life story as he described the (pun intended) ups and downs of both. Heughan's humor was pronounced throughout the book as well, and there were several times I found myself chuckling along to his asides and many, many accents.

If you come into this one hoping for Outlander to be the primary focus (or that this will be a tell-all of all his deepest, darkest secrets), prepare to be disappointed in that aspect; his life story is much more than that, and the lens with which he recounts his pivotal moments is fascinating. He oscilates between revealing private epiphanies and protecting the aspects of his personal life he would prefer to keep contained without leaving the reader (or, in my case, listener) feeling like something's missing. As someone who is not regularly a consumer of memoir, I am pleased to have picked this one up, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would recommend!

One of the best actor / acting / journey memoirs I have read. What I really liked about this was the story jumped between his hiking journey along the West Highland Way and also his journey as a theatre / tv and movie actor. What is very impressive is that the jumping back and forth between his over a week or so hiking journey and his reflection on his beginnings as an actor, is very seamless and so well written. Also, this memoir is quite unique in that it talks about an actor's journey striving to make it to the "acting big time" that is over quite a few years - 15 - 20 odd years, which is quite admirable and wonderful to see in the pursuit of a dream. (I had not idea he was in a circus / theatrical version of the caped crusader!) A very genuine, honest, at times humorous (love his relationship with the mushrooms on his hiking journey) journey of a read.

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook on his path for self-discovery amidst his journey in and through the spotlight. Very inspiring while remaining down to earth, love how relatable he comes across, like to have a dram with him someday :)

I really enjoyed this, at lot more than I expected. It was a cool way to tell his story.
I love that he read the book and that he included recordings from his adventure in the audiobook!
