I listed to this on Audible and it was delightful. Sam has quite a way with storytelling and I enjoyed the way he wove together his personal story with his journey through the West Highland Way. It left me with a smile and my own self reflections.

Listened to the audiobook and Sam was magnificent. I really liked the structure of this memoir around the West Highland trail and how it propelled the telling of his story. Would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Sam Heughan or the Outlander show.

Last Christmas I gifted this book to my mom, because I knew she liked 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳, and that she would maybe appreciate it.

After she finished reading it, she lent it right back to me because she thought it might be a perfect fit for me.

I let it sit on my shelf for MONTHS until we were 1 week way from making our voyage over to Ireland/Scotland/London for an epic trip, and thought it was probably time to sit down with Sam and read about some Scottish adventures.

And I have to say, I actually really loved it!?

The backbone of this book is his spontaneous (and frankly poorly planned out) 100 mile adventure over the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Fort William. While telling us about his trials and tribulations over those miles, he also shares stories from growing up in rural Scotland, struggling as an actor, and finally landing a dream role on 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳.

I actually found I had many similar experiences as Sam growing up; it’s always fun to see how the “human experience” connects us all in different ways.

I really loved his adventure, and it reminded me of other memoirs I’ve read/listened to in the past by ultrarunners. Sam didn’t run this route, he hiked it, but it’s such a similar experience to traverse such a great distance by foot. Frankly, I’m glad I didn’t read it until “too late” so I wouldn’t be too tempted to try to tackle some of this trail while we’re over there “as a family”. This isn’t that kind of trip, Marya…🤣(Yes, I would be that crazy. It looks like the *worst* kind of fun!)

I really enjoyed this book quite a lot, and really felt I got to know Sam the person pretty well, and I have to say, he’s pretty cool. If you enjoy a fun, adventurous memoir, I think you’d like this one as well!

What this book is giving:
✅ Memoir
✅ 100 mile hike
✅ 15 years struggling to catch a break
✅ Father absent from 18-months old
✅ 🍄
