“To anyone who feels alone on their journey, or in need of some company, come with me, I promise you won’t be walking alone, and I’ll buy you a dram at the end.” ~ Sam Heughan
Pure dead brilliant!!! This is by far the best audiobook I’ve listened to! It deserves a Grammy!
Sam Heughan’s inspiring journey along the West Highland Way is beautifully chronicled in Waypoints. With eloquence and sincerity, he shares the defining moments of his life and career, from meeting his absent father, to his pursuit of acting and landing the iconic role of Jamie Fraser. As he walks through the stunning Scottish landscape, Sam reflects on the importance of slowing down and embracing each moment, rather than focusing solely on ticking items off a to-do list.
What makes this book truly remarkable is Sam’s impeccable narration, seamless transitions between his past and present, and the wonderful array of accents and voices he employs. Additionally, the inclusion of voice memos at the end of each chapter adds a delightful personal touch, enhancing the already entertaining commentary.
Overall, Waypoints is a captivating and insightful read that offers readers a glimpse into Sam Heughan’s life and the lessons he has learned along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book and highly recommend it to anyone seeking inspiration and a great story.
“While I prepare to reach the end of the walk I have come to love, it’s comforting to know that a new chapter awaits me at first light. For me, this journey has removed the noise and demands of everyday life to remind me that we’re all just passing from one waypoint to the next. What matters is that we can look back at each stage, knowing we made the most of it.” ~ Sam Heughan

Nice read and it was an interesting way to interweave travel and biography. Found it a little repetitive and perhaps a bit superficial at times, but enjoyed the glimpse into the life of this actor and his personal journey. Was left with the thought it would be really interesting to sit down over a dram and have a deeper conversation, as he hinted at a lot of interesting things to contemplate and discuss - but obviously, that is meant to be reserved for the people closest to him that have earned his trust - everyone deserves to guard their privacy and innermost thoughts. He seems to be down-to-earth in the realities of stardom and that is how the memoir came across.
3.5 stars rounded up? I thought it was interesting, both stories - how he told his journey as an actor while also telling his journey in the hike. He comes across as down to earth and a pretty nice guy, even tho he likes to also point out how down to earth and nice he is lol.

Star of Outlander, Sam Heughan, takes us on a journey across the 96 mile West Highland Way in Scotland, and along the way reveals the waypoints of his life. Planned on a whim, completely overpacked (although those walking sticks did come in handy), and requiring multiple days of travel in less than ideal conditions, Sam uses this time to find himself and reconnect with the world around him. He reflects on his love for the outdoors, his country and his career. His insights into his own life are interwoven along his path over those many miles, ending at the top of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Scotland. Needless to say there is struggle, self doubt, humor. pain, and determination along the way, both on the trail and on reflecting about his own life so far. A love letter to his country and his art, Waypoints will entertain, inspire and challenge you.

I honestly did not know what to expect from this memoir, but it was very good! I recently have been reading memoirs as audiobooks, but this was a Kindle edition.
Anyway, if you are looking for "dirt" on Sam's love life or the Outlander cast/crew, this is NOT it. It is a raw and painful journey of his life with the juxtaposition of his journey walking the West Highland Trail in late October/early November. It worked really well and made his story so much stronger.
My biggest takeaway is that Sam is NOT Jamie - he plays the character Jamie on a television show. Since I live in Los Angeles, I have run into a few celebrities in my life and have never interrupted their lives ever.
If you want to learn about Sam and his life journey, read this book. If you want gossip, go get a life!!
RECOMMEND!!!

It's hard to really "rate" a person's story from their own mind so I only put 4/5 because I wanted something haha
I loved how Sam told his stories and his whole narrative of finding what is best for him and fighting through the struggle of the walk itself. I've loved Outlander for a long time, but this really even ups it for me since I now feel I know him that much more.
Would recommend!
