The Lies That Bind

Emily Giffin

3.47 AVERAGE

Pre 9/11 NYC. An encounter with a handsome man in a bar turned into a whirlwind romance. Then the happening of September 11 and the disappearance of the handsome man. But... things are not always what they seem.

Also, I always like it when an author throws in a couple Easter eggs from earlier books. In this case, it was Ethan, Darcy, and Rachel from Something Borrowed and Something Blue who made a cameo appearance.

I really wish she didn’t end up with Grant in the end BUT I could not put this book down and I was really surprised that he was even still alive! I was definitely rooting for her and Matthew and was hoping the baby would be his. Still loved it!

This was our book club book for the month of January 2023 and I wish I could have liked this one more.

The plot twist for me was just a little TOO unbelievable… I felt as if everything that was happening in the book was just unrealistic. I also did not love how the author used 9/11 for a romance plot twist…

I love Emily and most of her books, this one just wasn’t my cup of tea…

I was a fan of Emily Giffin's after her first couple of books, but this one is a hot mess. Writing tip: don't use a horrific terrorist attack as the backdrop for a "romance," if you can call this a romance. I'm glad it was a quick read -- I wanted to finish it, but I'm glad I didn't waste more time on it. It started out well enough, and I kept hoping it wouldn't go where I thought it was going. Spoiler alert: it did. Don't waste your time or your money on this one.

Oh. My. Gosh.

This was a good book, easy to stay engaged in. Had me feeling all the feels.

But that “shocking scene” literally had me shook!!!!

I have been in a reading slump and this is exactly what I needed. Sure, I could have predicted pretty much every turn in the storyline, but did that take away from the fun in reading it? Absolutely not. A love story, drama, fate, all the feel-good, binge-able fluff I needed to remind me to dive back into my stack of TBR and out of technology.

I was SO excited to get an early copy of this book. I love Emily Giffin's books. After reading it, I'm so let down.
This story started out great but it quickly went downhill. Unrealistic and downright stupid at some points. *SPOILERS* -->
Spoiler But really .. guy just saw the opportunity to fake his death with 9/11 and disappear. The stupid main character is going to befriend his wife without telling her who she is .. And then she's going to take back this married, cheating, death-faking asshole. Wow.

This part has no relevance to this book and does not effect my rating but I also want to say that I have been disappointed in Emily. The past couple years her social media is full of nothing but hate for Trump. I understand voicing your opinion but it is all she posts about on her stories. Blatant hate for the President. Recently she has also added Meghan Markle to her hate list. Not what I would expect from following an official author account.

This was my first time reading anything Emily Griffen and I think I may have started with the wrong book from her. I did enjoy the writing style, but a lot in this book was hard to swallow. The main character started out relatable, but started to really irk me as the book went on with the lying and selfishness that made me not feel much compassion for her or the situations she got herself in. The way that the aftermath of 9/11 is described brought back many memories from that time about how scarred everyone was felt real, but then the way that she turned 9/11 in a twisted plot point was almost insulting to those who lost loved ones that day.

All in all, it was just okay. Am I happy I read it? Sure. Would I recommend to a friend? Most likely not.
